Looking for A7A10 plunger clutch assembly
« on: 03.10. 2015 16:52 »
Hi guys new to the forum and wondering if anyone has a clutch assembly for a 46-52 plunger frame complete for our project we are trying to get together. Anyone have one for sale or any leads would be greatly appreciated. It's stamped
"SC T" on the top near the clutch leaver and cast number 42-3005 on the side. Thanks Kevin  *smiley4*

Hello,
I'm a little confused, you say you want a clutch assembly yet you quote the number on the std gear box. Do you need the whole clutch unit with plates, basket etc or is it the lever you want?

Kind regards TTJohn

Kevin
I may have the clutch unit as I have several knocking about in the shed, if I get a chance tomorrow I will see what I can sort out, of cause they will be second hand, although I may have new friction plates. I let you know after I get to sort the stuff out.

Kind regards John

Hi Kevin,
Normally a "SCT" gearbox is from a swingarm frame not a plunger???
"SCT" would have a tapered mainshaft not splined?
Plunger and swing arm gearboxes are very different in how they are fitted ??

Curious

That stamp could mean anything if its not normally on that box (I think it's scrambler/trials? Or 'T' Usually denotes Torrington needle roller?), only way to know for sure is have a Bo-peep inside.
Other thing is, if it does have a tapered shaft, I think under normal circumstance you'll be hard pressed to fit a S/A clutch (tapered shaft)

Hi Dutch,
The SA and plunger mainshafts will swop over
The splined shaft is often fitted to the SA box so a Norton clutch can be fitted, or some other fancy type *work*

Yes the shafts swap over, but what I mean is that the clutch basket may not fit in the Plunger/Rigid cases...? I had a feeling from experience that the S/A ones are bigger dia.  *????*
Having said that I'm only hypothesizing a shaft change- hopefully wrong for Kevs sake *smile*

Right about that duTch. An SA clutch won't fit into a plunger case

HI Kevin,
AHA *ex* *ex* *ex*
That makes more sense now !!
Ok you seem to have a swingarm gearbox ftted with a splined mainshaft from a plunger box
A plunger BSA clutch has a duplex chain sprocket, japanese probably single row chain?
What you need is a Norton or a speedway clutch that fits a Norton or BSA spline, like this,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NORTON-MATCHLESS-AJS-AMC-CLUTCH-COMPLETE-RICKMAN-CAFE-RACER-TRITON-/401002979941?hash=item5d5da3e265

 an NEB clutch maybe?
Theres usually a guy at Stafford show in the Argyll hall who sellls secondhand NEB clutches at reasonable prices, probably have to get the norton spline centre from NEB though?

The ScT box would be a strange choice for a drag bike as its wide ratio? unless its been fitted with different gears????
Quite a sought after item with the pre 65 scrambles boys?

Hi Kevin,
No worries,  *smile*
Regarding custom brackets,  you would do well to tie the crankcase directly to the gearbox
On BSA's and other makes the rear engine plates hold the gearbox, and then onto the frame above and below the swing arm pivot point,
The BSA box is usually fixed at the bottom mount and swivels about this bolt , with the adjuster at the top mount

Cheers
