Gene Thiessen
« on: 03.08. 2015 21:15 »
I wanted to share this with everyone, and ask if anyone has any photos, or article'.about Gene Thiessen. This is his 1951 Factory Built BSA 650 Ahcohol Burner, that he sat land speed records at Bonnevile and Rosemond Dry Lake in 1951. The bike has never been ridden, except at these two events
I am also asking if anyone followed his career, as I am currently trying to get him inducteed into the AMA motorcycle hall of fame. He was also one of the original BSA wrecking crew. Thank you for any time and consideration
Hope everyone enjoys these photos, as much as I enjoy having the motorcycle

Does anyone have any idea of a value for this motorcycle?
Have original documentation of speed records, trophies from flat track racing, and riding gear from dad.

I dont think you can put a value on a motorcycle such as this, the value is what someone will pay.

That being the case if you do want to sell the bike and you have all the documentation to prove its "provenance" including being able to prove that it is the correct engine and frame etc etc then I would suggest approaching one of the larger companies that hold motorcycle auctions and consider putting it up for auction. I think that is the only way to market this bike, it needs to be offered to a world wide market to realise its maximum value.

Chances are if you did sell it on the open market for a set price you would soon see it re-sold at one of the major auctions anyway.

If you want to know its value for insurance purposes then that might be a bit more difficult, I think insuring it for a "set value" is the only option rather than any sort of "market value" and that would leave you at the mercy of an insurance valuater.

A real piece of motorcycling and BSA history.

Thank you Brian for your input. I am not looking to sell, I need to insure it. I am an only child, born and raised (and still in) the industry. I really plan on keeping it in the family!

I'm glad to hear you intend to keep the bike.

Value for insurance will be difficult, with a "one off" rare bike like this there is no precedence. No amount of money could ever replace it if anything ever happened to it but off course you do need a "value" of some kind.

I can only suggest contacting one of the larger companies that specialise in historic motorcycle insurance and have a chat with them and then you will at the very least have some sort of "starting point".

Good luck with it.

Racer4,

First of all, welcome to the forum. *welcome* You certainly came on board with a unique and fascinating bike. I not sure this is where you were coming from, but is Gene your dad, and that's why you have the bike? I don't know where you are located (other than the U.S.) but you might consider loaning the bike to the National Motorcycle Museum in Amarosa, IA. When I was there they did not have an A7 or A10 on display and yours would definitely be something that a lot of people would love to see close up. I'm one of them.

We're very happy you decided to drop in... it's great to see you keeping your fathers life story alive  *wink2*
There's a few old BSA racers still active on this forum, & even some Bonneville racers, your dad may be interested in reading their progress?

Show him the links below & watch the twinkle in his eye & grin on his face..
