First BSA
« on: 27.06. 2015 13:15 »
Hello All
I'm new to BSA but have had a British bike of one form or another since 1967 when at the tender age of 12 I purchased my first motorcycle, a 1956 Norton ES2 500 single. Actually, it wasn't a purchase, it was even trade for my Sears riding saddle.
I recently purchased a one owner West Coast type 1963 Super Rocket in Texas, USA, then had it shipped to me here in Vancouver, Canada.

The bike looks to be unrestored but in very good condition overall. The original owner passed away a couple of years ago and I bought the bike from his son. The only change to the bike that I can see is the Carb, now a Concentric.
The son tells me that the bike was ordered thru Hap Alzina and that his father requested it be in Catalina Blue. I guess Hap Alzina could get BSA to do such things because it is in that colour and looks to be original paint.
The bike arrived two days ago and it started after three kicks, then one kick every time thereafter. It had not been run for a couple of years, but had not wet sumped!
The primary was way over full however , so I drained the excess off. The trans was down a bit, so perhaps the trans oil is slowly leaking into the primary?
The bike starts easily and runs well up to about half throttle opening but misfires above that. The clutch is slipping badly, I'm wondering if the overly full primary may have caused that problem?
I expect the Carb is gummed up from sitting, so will disassemble and clean that then see if the misfire persists. All in all, it seems pretty decent, no blue smoke on startup, lots of compression and I think pretty decent power once the clutch and misfire are fixed.
These Super Rockets and A 10s in general are very pretty motorcycles. I find this one to be very comfortable as well.
Glen

Hi glen and welcome.

Nice bike you have there

FYI there is a motorcycle festival up here in Squamish next weekend 4th July.
All sorts of bikes will be in attendance.

If time allows bring your rocket for a burn up the Hwy 99

Welcome.

What a great bike. I think you are going to enjoy it a lot. I'm already enjoying it and I don't own it. If you get a chance, a few photos would be appreciated. I'd really like to see some from the Squamish event. Also, being a survivor in great shape would give your bike a leg up in our annual "Best Picture" contest.

It's interesting to me that we have a recent spate of members from the Vancouver area. You guys could almost make up your own local BSA club.

You can definitely tell the difference in the size of our dogs. Our pug starts barking at the bike if I just kick it over without it starting. I don't fully understand this. Maybe she's responding to the compression.

Thanks to everyone for the nice welcome. I have been searching and reading on this site for awhile in order to gain some knowledge on the A/series bikes. The thing that really stood out was how pleasant this forum is. Lots of knowledge here too.
Regarding the barking dog in the Video, that is Ron, my 185 pound Mastiff cross. As soon as a bike starts up he wants to race it down the driveway. So far he has won every race and seems to know it. I couldn't get by him even with the Maico 490. There is a turn in the driveway that he takes at full bore, I have to take it easy or I will end up on the ground.

G'day Glen  *welcome*.
Very nice looking bike mate.
I recon she'll be more comfy on a trip than the Vinie. The SR for cruising and the Vinie for blasting.

Definitely a more laid back stance on the SR. The  Vincent Special is really comfortable for long hauls though as I built it to fit my body. I did a 600 mile day with it (Langley BC to the Alberta Border) and felt fine afterward.
Right now I can't start it as my right knee cannot take the force needed to roll it over. At 1360 CC and 10.5 to one with squish heads, it  takes quite a jump to get it to roll thru compression. Fortunately it can be fairly easily switched to left hand start. Then my left knee will blow!

With the SR, just an easy prod or two and it fires up.
