Wanted, S/Arm side-stand outer mounting lug
« on: 11.06. 2015 19:19 »
Hi All. I'm in need of a (or 2) outer mounting lugs for a swinging arm frame, this is the part with the tang on it with the side-stand pivot bolt hole when the inner part of the clamp with threaded holes, is brazed to the frame tube. I have 2 genuine BSA prop stands both without this mounting. Genuine BSA parts preferred as these seem to be a bit thicker on the lug. Will pay postage if anyone can help. Many Thanks, Peter
ps. The part shown in the attached photo is from a pattern stand, the anchor pin for the spring is an obvious identifying point

Hello spanersc, I see you've had no replies to your question. Have you found a solution yet?

I'm beginning to look for a replacement s/a prop stand owing to a breakage on a cross channel ferry recently. C and D no longer stock them and, probably like you, I'm very wary of available quality.

Would be pleased to hear your findings.

My replacement side stand broke see  http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=7172.msg49953#msg49953

So I made one, a long job but worth it and over engineered.
The bracket requested here is basically a piece of pipe cut in half with bolts welded on for the mounting holes and a flat piece of metal for the arm pivot. I can not recall what was used for the spring mount. I did not do any welding (A friend did it for me)), just a lot of filing and the result looks good, very like the pic below. Then I used a Suzuki bandit arm for the side stand its self.
I still have some of the pipe and can do measurements and take some pics if it would help.

Hello Angus, that's a neat solution and I have considered something similar. As it is, I've the opportunity to claim a replacement from the ferry company. Were that not the case I would probably be angle grinding and filing right now.
Pleased your result did the job.

Hi Terry.   As of yet I have failed to locate a genuine BSA lug so are still using the universal 'pattern' one which is not great and worries me to the extent of not often using the side stand. With a genuine BSA prop stand fixed to it, it also allows the stand to travel well past its normal 'on' position. I've searched  several bike jumbles in hope of finding one but no luck yet.  If someone with an original could post some pictures and careful measurements of the part that would be an awfully nice thing to do!

It seems this is a part that is often missing here in the states on most frames, I dont know if these are prone to breaking or if the early 70s chop saw got them all. *sad2*

After hearing about bikes tipping over because of sidestand mount/ leg failure, I am afraid of the pattern ones also. I would rather spend 20 hours with a file than not even use the side stand at all.

Edit: I did just find this, no idea what kind of quality it really is though.

This side stand from my Scrambler is completely self made and absolute solid, with no fear to fall off.
