Cylinder base gasket

I am ready to put my cylinder on and am using spacer plate because I have .40 over pistons question is do I need 2 gaskets??I only have 1 can I make the other out of cork??Do I really need the spacer plate??Otherwise its another 2 week wait from the UK.

 ?? not quite sure why you'd even need one spacer plate simply because of being .040 over...?
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

yes agree with duTch as long  we're talking +.040 diameter.
and don't think cork is a good idea for a gasket between crankcase and barrel, being as that is subject to compression forces

G'day Drew.
Depends on the dome of the pistons (comp ratio). A 0.040" overbore will only increase the compression by about 5% so take a 7:1 up to a 7.35:1 and not worth worrying about.

If you're running on pool  petrol (72 octane) in some form of time warp back to the UK in 1955 then probably a good idea to fit it. 
Alternatively if you have compression over 10:1 otherwise I'd leave it out.
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.
