Rocker box solid copper gaskets for sale
« on: 05.05. 2015 10:00 »
Hello All.
I have just had a quantity of solid copper rocker box gaskets made, lazer cut out of 0.07mm thick C106 soft copper, I was fed up with mine leaking. These are on sale from me, now, at £15-00 per set plus p&p £2-50 in the U.K. other countries maybe a little more.

Kind regards TTJohn

John,

First, thanks for the offer, but, being shortsighted and having just finished reassembly, I'm not ready to jump in for a set of the copper rocker-box gaskets. Also, I've built a "CJ1" (ChaterleaJohn) shock-absorbing head steady that I'm trying in hope of reducing leaks. I know there has been talk here in the past about the copper gaskets, but I'm a bit confused. Why are they more leak-free than regular gaskets and sealant?  I think you will have plenty of takers.

Richard L.

To my way of thinking the copper is a solid gasket and have greatly improved shear strength over plain gasket material. The forces that be try to shear the rockerbox from the head and I believe the reason the plungers/rigids are less prone to leaking (there *whistle*).

I've found leaks from the rocker box due to poor cut gaskets, they are very thin (cross section) at one point, I now cut out my own from gasket paper and no leaks.
Copper sounds good, and I bet  TTJohn has the shape of them spot on, thanks I'll keep your offer in mind for future

I have never had any problems .I make my own out of thick gasket paper. I always deburr the bolt holes and tighten them up even.

Bill,

I don't know where you are buying gaskets, but SRM's are made from very good material, appear to be a perfect fit and are 0.036" thick. I have also made my own in a pinch.

well Richard from many sources but admittedly not SRM but from different dealers they all seem the same so probably they originate from one place - the Big W maybe,
but this is getting away from TT Johns kind offer

"... 0.07mm thick..."

Is that correct?  3 thou?

Not 30 thou?

Terry.

I think you will find that is 28 thou thick.

1 inch = 25.4 mm

1 mm = 0.040 inches (near enough)

0.07mm = 0.07 * 40 thou = 2.8 thou

0.7 mm = 28 thou

I agree 30 thou was an approximation.
