Mounts for oil tank and tool box.
« on: 01.11. 2014 11:10 »
Hi, Being new to the A10, can anyone tell me how the top mount to the frame is made.  Do you just use a long bolt or is there a spacer between the two ears of the frame?  cant find anything listed in the parts book but without something how do you stop the frame ears deforming when you tighten the bolts.   Thanks, Dave.

A good question I do have spacers (not sure if they are for there or someplace else) so I'm not sure they are standard, and haven't used them
However given that the rear suspension top holds the lugs out and the squashability of the rubber bush in the oil tank / toolbox top fixing it would require a fair bit pressure on the bolt to deform the lug - more than is necessary to secure the tank/toolbox.
if in doubt a touch of mild Loctite would bring piece of mind
Oh yes the bolt goes right through

HI All,
Very often  its the most  abused and mangled item found on BSA A & B models  *rant* *rant*

Al the bits needed to mount the oil tank properly are shown here

Thanks, BSA BILL for your informative reply, much appreciated.

chaterlea25 Thanks for your link, shame the part in question, 42-8339 is shown but not listed, is this the bit that goes between the frame ears?

Regards Dave.

Well still none the wiser.

The parts book shows 2 spacers though only one is needed I believe, the other is listed as "with correct diameter" I would expect it to go between the frame ears. BUT  the bolt is 5/.16 bsc. The hole in the frame is just under 3/8", the hole in the oil tank is about 5/16 clearance. It has a recessed end on it. Where does the rubber tube go and as there is only a nut and washer there is nothing to tighten up on.   Looked at several A10 , no spaces and just a nut and bolt, no rubber so what is the correct mounting? Lots of bikes owned by members someone must have got to the bottom of it.
To add to the mystery the toolbox is similarly mounted but has a larger hole (just under 3/8" hole instead of 5/16" clearance.). As the other toolbox mounts are solid I would not have thought the top mount would have a rubber but no exploded view of the tool box and mounting. Very strange.

Thanks in advance, Dave.

aren't the spacers nicknamed " cotton bobbins" as they look just like one , BobH

Ive seen cotton bobber spacers between the frame and mudguard, the parts book show the spacers as parallel with 5/16" hole., ordered some so will see when they arrive.

All parts book are not created equal, my opinion is these spacers (?) are not for the purpose suggested (possible the mid front oil tank mounting)
The thickness of the lugs is such that you would really have to try to deform them.
the rubber bush/tube sits between the frame and the oil tank mounting, you could put one the other side as well if you want.

Thanks, BSA Bill,  The spacer is supposed to used on both the fixings, parts book shows 2. If you do as you say, you cant tighten theon the nut because it goes into the recess of the tank and just turns. It is impossible to get a spanner on it.
I know there are ways to overcome this and mount the tank but I would like to know how it was meant to be fitted. Someone must know.

I will take some pics later today of how mine fixes, spent yesterday setting up a new printer as the print head died on the old one.
Took a big chunk of yesterday to understand why it works on my tablet and wife's laptop but not my PC ( light came on and Irealized I needed to download 64 bit driver for my PC ), then to just finish off the day I realized I 'd payed twice for the D**n thing (on line and in the shop) Bl**y memory again, and you think old bikes cause bother *problem*

A couple of pics
one shows the Bobbin spacer mentioned above it has nothing to do with the tank
the other is how I have my tank upper fitting done
the bolt is 5/16 , and a little slack in the hole but takes the tube spacer, the oil pipe I use for the rubber buffer is just a little to tight for the spacer, a better fitting pipe or the proper buffers would allow the spacer tube to be used, in my case the oil pipe is just right for fitting in the upper tank and so I don't use the spacer, so it's bolt through - frame  - rubber - oil tank - rubber - big flat washer - nut.
Tighten up until the rubber buffers are squeezed up tight enough to hold the tank firmly, bit of trial and error required to get the right length.
(modified this a bit - removed my last comment as it was incorrect)
Hope this is helpful

HI All,
Apologies for not replying Dave, my parts book had gone AWOL  *sad2* ,
I seem to remember that I got a "square" flat rubber washer that is supposed to go on the "T" bolt as well as the parts posted??
I wound up making a press tool to make the cupped washer for the bottom mount and I think used 1/8th gasket rubber between tank and frame

As far as I am aware the sleeve should fit through the top oil tank mount, I dont know why yours wont??
