As I said earlier my 1956 A7 is as it left the factory and it has the brake cams without the external nuts but the parts book for that year shows it with external nuts. I can now only believe that it was a BSA thing that they used whatever was available on the day for any given model.

Where can I find information to convert a 7" front brake into a twin leading brake?

Bits Stuck Anywhere? Yep, its what you have to do to get parts off the shelf and money in the till!
I'd like to know why the A's and B's have so many different bloody brakes? The half width have the best rep, so why change? My '56 Gold Flash had lever nuts on the inside. Im confident it was original

I know this is an old thread but interesting because I'm quite certain my first ever A10, bought in 1972, had the smooth not bolt on brake arms. Also, had a look through the Ariel site above and there is quite a lot of info about 2LS conversions, both cable and hydraulic...and then came across this picture....opinion seems to be its caused by brittle old castings, though exactly the same thing happened on mine....only a few months after buying the bike!

This idea sounded really exciting for my 57 RR Uncle Rob, until I saw your photo! Yikes! I've lived through two rather horrific motorcycle wrecks this last year and I damn sure don't need to see if the third time is a charm!

Hi All,
To the best of my knowledge a member of the Ariel club developed and produced TLS brake plates for the full width alloy hubs.
Presumably they are beefed up to prevent catastrophes like above *eek*
Attached are a couple of pic's I took of one last year

I'd completely forgotten the incident until I came across the pic on the Ariel site....there they suggest it may be due to the age of the casting, but mine happened when it was less than 20 years old. The bike came with a Steib sidecar attached (which I promptly unbolted) and I'm now wondering if sidecar use might possibly stress the brakeplate in a way that might cause failure?

My first presumption would be that they're not.

Looks like the brake lever design was modified during the production run, from a lever and spindle (the smooth version) with detachable cam to a spindle and cam with a detachable lever (ie the nut version).

The B series and A series front wheel complete less tyre (excluding the Road Rocket) were the same part 42 5634.

See the caption at foot of the photo which is from Pitmans Book of the BSA 1957 edition.

Just checked the registration details for my 1956 A7 and it was first registered in July 1956 so it is probably one of the earlier ones with the ariel hubs with the smooth version lever.
