Black pear shaped tank badges
« on: 17.08. 2014 20:20 »
The A7 (1961 A7), when I bought it in 1976 had the black plastic pear shaped tanks badges. When it was restored it was fitted with red ones. I know it should not and I am riding it honest, but it bugs me and I have been looking for some black ones. I don’t seam to be able to find any except on other bikes that are for sale. Any ideas of a source.

Take your granddaughter to distract the vendor long enough to acquire the ones you want. *bash*
I haven't seen black ones for many years. Good luck.

Don't the black badges belong to A65s?

The fellow I bought my '61 A10 from claimed he bought it from the original owner and it had black badges, I replaced them with red ones as the black ones are cracked.

That of course doesnt mean that black is correct but maybe ??? who knows.

The original bit does not bother me too much on the A7. I just want it how it was when I bought it in 1976 and then it had black badges.

ps Muskrat don't have a granddaughter yet and in know rush to acquire one *smile*, but could be a plan for the future if nothing turns up  *lol*

Yippee  *yeah* Xmas came early  *yeah*(sort of)
After Biding on many listings and every set of black tank badge's going for over £50, I finally won some and for only £29  *smile* including shipping and they are in Great nick. Wont say what my max bid was but I was going higher and higher each time. So finally she will be as purchased in 1976. roll back the clock.

Angus,
My '60 SR has black badges also, no idea if they were original. Looks good with the blue tank IMO.
But, there is black and there is black. Some good and some woeful.
Here is a few that I have.

Don't spoil it please. I am actually very pleased with them and have been looking for ages. They rarely seam to come into stock new with the suppliers in the UK. They are not new but don't look like they have been 'used much'. They appear to be a slight mix between your top one and the one fitted, as in there is a slight gold tint to the pointy bits but the centre BSA is silver. Anyway she is not original as factory but as I bought her and that is what I wanted all along, as well as to ride her as much as possible.

The first year of the new badges they were colour matched to the tanks.
So there was red, light & dark blue, green, yellow & black that  know of to date.
When the original batch of matched colours ran out BSA reveted to the generic black or red.
The last set of light blue ones I know of changed hands for over  $ 1000 Aus.
As the USA & OZ got their bikes before the UK it is no beyond belief that the UK only ever saw the black or red ones.
AFAIK Motoplas the BSA subsidary that made them got sucked up Dennis Poore in his government funded asset strip.
As the popularity of thermo setting plastic badges on cars, fridges, radios etc wained they got sold & resold & sold again till finally they became part of Wassal
