Dunno Trev-I won't say you're wrong as I haven't seen lots of them, but all the cush springs I have seen (A10) have been round section, and the slide in the service book appears to have a round one? but the M20 I had, had a square section clutch spring...?

I have had bikes with both round & square ones then again none of them were brand new when I got my hands on them.
FWIW my current M20 has a round spring which I can push on and start to turn.
it came with a square section that was a lot stiffer which I have never used as I can not compress it far enough to start the threads.

I copy and pasted Drews BotoPhucket pics to a thingy, so I can paste them so they easier to see and in case B-P implodes, but can't figure how to do it just now so *watch this space*.... *conf2*

From what I can make out is the early cush drive which had 4 lobes was fitted with the heavier square section spring and the latter 2 lobe cam got the softer round ones.
I have not seen a new square section spring for a very long time as the modern pattern parts are round section.
But every now & then some NOS square section ones turn up
