John Bull rally
« on: 24.01. 2009 21:37 »
Well its been decided we, and at the moment that means Polly and his brother inlaw Dave, Graham and myself all from the Wiltshire branch BSAoc (except Polly who is in the welsh branch) are getting the 8am ferry from Dover to Dunkirk on Friday morning (1st may) and returning on monday 4th on the 10am ferry.
Now if anyone else is thinking of going then nows the time to book your ferry as the price will only go up as may approaches. £49-02p return with Norfolk line plus any credit card charge(£4 for mastercard) so phone them up and ask them for the online price other wise they will try to sting you with a £5 booking charge and then send a cheque to them that way there is no extra charges
The rally finishes on the Sunday but we intend to stay in Dunkirk on the Sunday night at a Formula 1 and then go and have a meal in the town and blow the remaining Euros so breaking the ride back home over the two days.
Anyone else thinking of going?
How about you this year LJ?
Richard

I've not yet made any plans Richard as at the moment Father is not too well. I rather think that most of my BSA activities will be on the spur of a moment again like last year.

As far as I know the John Bull raly was started in 1983 by the Belgium BSA owners club and was or is now an annual rally for old and British bikes. 2007 saw the 25th Jubilee rally at Velzeke which I really enjoyed and the weather was brilliant which helped of course.
The rally is put on each year in a different area of Belgium rotating each year to one in the middle region of Flanders one the french side and one near to the Dutch border unfortunately my sense of Geography is not very good this years rally is some 150 miles from Dunkirk. I have pasted a link below to the Belgium web site

http://www.bsaoc.be/

The rallys are really well attended and the hosts are some of the nicest people I have ever met and really work hard to make a good rally.
I will try to post a link to my photo bucket site with some of the last three years pictures but it will be later as i have to go out now

LJ I hope dad gets on the road to recovery soon

I have made an album up on photo bucket with 134 pictures (some boring) of the last three years of my John Bull rally.
However it seems that if I put a url on for that album the rest of my sub albums become visible to anyone even though I have them marked as private I am trying to resolve this but as I am computer illiterate this may take some time

I have that same problem with photobucket.  Let us know if you find a way to solve it.

As promosed some photos of the last three years of going to the John Bull in Belgium
They mean something to me and probably not a lot to anyone else but it should give some idea of the rallys
Always well fed and entertainment on the Saturday evening.
So click on the link then on the right hand side there is a slideshow link click on that sit back and enjoy.

I made my main album public then went in to edit on the sub albums and made all of them private with the exception of the John Bull one I did not bother with a guest password.
This means that the main album is public as well as any sub albums marked public, so I have moved most of the pictures into sub albums marked up Private which are not viewable.
Hope this makes sense

Hi All
The time has arrived and the bike is well sorted and loaded up already for the off tomorrow (Thursday 30th) Polly and now Geoff with his BSA Rocket Three will arrive at mine sometime in the morning and we will then leave for Swindon via Purton to pick up Colin on his Triumph Bonneville then join Graham on his A10 and Dave on his Bonneville, so the five of us will be invading Dover for the Thursday night staying at a B&B and getting the 8am ferry to Dunkirk and I believe a rabble of Kentish men and women will also be getting the same Ferry. Then if all goes to plan Shaun should already be in France and is hoping to meet the Ferry in Dunkirk.
So it may be an interesting ride to the rally site.
If any board members are going can you make yourself known to me over there you can't mistake me a bit round, bald (just the normal hair around the edges) and sporting a goatee type beard and caterpillar under the nose the bike is of course the red A10 Super Rocket.
I will of course catch up with all the posts on our return
Richard

Arrived at Dover had to ride down in the rain but no hiccups B&B was great with full English breakfast.
Arrived at Zonhoven 2-30pm really hot loads of people and bikes there already many old acquaintances and new ones made, the evening meal was beer of course with chicken and apple sauce (don?t ask) later on the Friday night a beer tasting was laid on with a verbal explanation of how Belgium beer was made and all the different types that were tasted. then back to the bar Do not underestimate Belgium beer I was crippled in the morning and felt really bad however after having a bowl of cereal I felt able to tackle a good cooked breakfast I felt as right as rain after that except for the headache which departed lunchtime our group decided not to participate on the run out but settled for a run into the town of Zonhoven and had a snack and drink at one of the local bars sat out in the brilliant sunshine of course I was on iced tea the rest of the weekend.
Later on there was some silly games which I missed due to walking around the site talking to all and sundry (even three old codgers from the Warrington BSAoc branch) there was also a jumble during the day where I purchased to resale later an A65 head in really good nick and a complete SRM 7 plate conversion with the three spring centre, springs, bearings and needle roller lift plate, all at a price that beggars belief. Due to the weight they will be brought back to the UK later on by a very helpful pair from Ashford it really is good to have friends like that.
The evening meal was I believe attended by over 400 people and went extremely well all three courses then a group which was well received, later saw me sitting and chatting around the log fire until 2-30am.
Sunday saw us take a leisureable ride to Dunkirk and the 6pm ferry to Dover where Graham and I rode back to Wiltshire arriving home at 11pm; Colin rode to Yppes with another group and stayed untill Monday the other three stayed at a pub in Ashford and rode back to Swindon and two to Wales on the Monday.
All the bikes went well with no breakdowns except for Grahams A10 which suffered a broken wire to the coil on the way down on the Thursday which was easily repaired and  misfiring on the way back home hence the early ferry but was due to bad plugs but frequently changing them when hot saw him back safely home.
The Belgium group work really hard and always put on a good weekend and if any read this a big THANK YOU from me
A good weekend with some good riding about for me 34o miles each way with Polly getting the long distance award with over 500 mile one way on a 1952 B31 which ran like clockwork which is more than I can say for Polly.
enough ramblings for now
Richard
