Hi All

I have eventually decided to go the old Brit bike route properly. Having just sold my Yamaha 900 Divi, I took the plunge with a BSA A7 SS. It was first registered in 1962, and is is in very good "ready to ride" condition. It will be arriving soon, and I will post my own pictures when it arrives.

I needed a running bike as I have already got too many projects of all kinds. One being a Royal Enfield Prince that was bought in the 1980's as a restoration project. Only just starting it ! Good thing is, it is all there without tin worm.

I live in Lancashire, UK.

The forum seems very friendly and has already given me a lot of pointers to information.

Regards

Peter

A 1962 ready-to-ride bike that you need working - Ah the optimism of yoof  *smile*

I bought one of those, being an equally optimistic yoof, and after months of fettling and improvements I now consider it 'ready-to-ride', and as a useful by-product I've learnt a hell of a lot about these machines. Plenty of good advice and helpful folk here and in the wider BSA world. You're never alone with an old British bike, you might feel it sometimes when the thing's being a pain and you're stuck as to why, but there's always someone ready to take the p*ss or perhaps even help  *smile*

Hi Ethelred

You have to be optimistic, but I am also realistic.

I did not want another project, and equally did not want a "recently restored" bike. You might as well pay less for an unknown quantity as pay more for a restored unknown quantity. There a lot of "dogs" out there.

I have a good few mates who will take the **** out of me I am sure, but we do that whatever we are working on.

I am spending a good bit of time sifting through the large amount of information already on this forum, and will no doubt be asking questions in due course.

I have now made contact with Steve, who is only 15 miles away. So, a result already.

Regards

Peter

Welcome Peter,
Buying an old bike is always a bit of a gamble. If I knew what I got back then, I might have never bought it.
The upside is that parts ain't expensive (that's if I compare to some of the parts prices I pay for the Isis), they ain't complicated to work on, and it doesn't need much to get them going. Loads of fun guaranteed.

I have now managed to ride my SS, and I am still grinning.

The only thing it has in common with my previous Yamaha Divi, is that it has 2 wheels and is steered by handlebars. It does not accelerate, corner or stop anything like the Divi, but it sure as hell is enjoyable. Buying this is the best thing I have done in years !

Because it is fit to ride, I have to be carefull not to take it apart. I will do small bits of work on a regular basis, but ensure it is always ready to ride. There are loads of country lanes around where I live, which are ideal for the SS.

Pictures will follow shortly.

Peter

Finally got round to some pictures. The bike is needing tlc over the winter, but will be ridden. Yesterday it took me over an hour to clean it up after almost 80 miles on twisty country lanes in the Bowland Forest area.

Question for the knowledgeable - Is the seat the correct shape for a 62 SS ?
