Cables for 389 carby

Hey All
 hey anyone running a 389 Amal on their A10- i need current part #'s (or a dealer that will know) 4 the  choke and throttle cables  to replace the 930  setup on my A10 currently -

I've tried a few places in the States but they don't carry them to any degree that they can just put them in a box and send them off (something about 389's being not the carb of choice due to age etc etc blah blah)

 yes that is i where i ordered the Carb from (didn't want to mess with trying to resuscitate an original one) - saw nothing on the web site about cables , but i did ask  them about the proper cables  in an email after purchasing the carby - hopefully will get a reply -

Mike... It isn't a difficult job to make up your own cables. You can buy kits of various cable sizes and cut to length, soldering the end nipples on etc. Put an aduster somewhere just below the throttle twist, it turns out to be a simple and rewarding job. Have a go! Likewise also with clutch cables, by the time your confident with those two then you might take on doing the brake cables although MUCH more care is needed with those.

Hi Mike,

The Amal 389 was a standard fitting for the Home Market A10 Golden Flash and the USA Market Royal Tourist from 1960 to 1963.  The throttle cables would differ between these models because the US Export Royal Tourist would probably have the higher American Spec handlebars fitted requiring slightly longer cables.  The choke cables would probably be the same as these were operated from a lever mounted on the frame just under the saddle.

The part number that I have for the US Royal Tourist throttle cable is 42-8769 but I can't find a reference number for a choke cable in my book.  However, if your choke lever is mounted on the frame the choke cable you need should be the same as the Home Market A10 Golden Flash from 1960 onwards and these are readily available (I believe) from most dealers.

 yes mine is the US royal tourist w/ a 930 amal stuck on it -i actually got the 930 setup sweet this weekend while waiting for the 389 to show from the UK-so we shall see how quickly i am to replace the 930 w/ the 389 when it does show  ;)

i located the choke for the 930 on the bars using extra parts from my norton amals which i replaced w/ a mikuni some time ago (probably 10 years and three moves)- its good to be a pack rat sometimes!

I am  unsure about the bars being US or UK versions as they do not seem to high, but then again i have nothing to compare them to as ever other bike i have has clubman bars

it is temping to make my own cables as LJ has suggested -  we shall see -

it is in the 30's -to mid 40's the past week in new york -so i have been trying to get as much riding and wrenching in as possible - i am having quite a good time on the A10 -took it for about a 75 mile spin yesterday ( with plates from the Norton to avoid the coppers as haven't registered it yet) and was frozen solid upon return but she ran like a champ

i then jumped on my norton commando (with the plates shuttled from the A10) to go to work and it seemed incredibly fast compared to the A10 (and a bitch to kick over!)

not better or worse though just a different ride

for carb throttle and choke, I have had good luck with a simple bicycle cable!  the housings are lined, and the cables are extruded to be smooth (if you get the right ones), you can solder on the fittings for one end and often use the existing.  a deraileur cable makes a great throttle, the end is just about right to fit right up in the slide!

I had a fellow the other day give it a crank just looking and he said it was the smoothest throttle action he'd ever felt!

for brake I wouldn't recommend it, or even clutch (that said I do have the front brake rigged still.)
