Dorothy lives!
« on: 25.06. 2013 05:53 »
Well, as the pictures show, I finally got there! ‘Dorothy’ as I call her (named after an old bad-tempered customer of mine!) is finally finished and registered with an age related plate.

OK she is not 100% original, but I think you have to make some decisions balancing originality and what you can realistically afford! She is still more original than the A10 I rode in my ‘yoof’ (see avatar)

All that remains is to say some ‘thank yous’ :

Groily, you are a legend mate! Thanks for the cam followers you sent me from France and refused payment for, appreciated! I will get over and buy you that beer one day!

Ken at Brightspark Magnetos for quickly and efficiently rebuilding my knackered magneto when I thought I had completed Dorothy, but then couldn’t get her to stay running! When I received the detailed report from him I couldn’t believe I even got her started in the first place! Thanks to his expert ministrations, she starts first kick every time! I would recommend his Magneto services to anyone.

Finally, thanks to all the guys on this forum for help, advice and encouragement. Patience too, when the questions were stupid!  *smile*

Lovely! To my eyes there's something odd about the petrol tank; is it level?

Hmmm, you may have a point Graybeard, it's not the correct tank of course, it's an Indian Gold Star copy, resplendant with several million hammer marks and the barrel of Cobra lager that it was formed over!

Thanks Gav, but to be honest, I think graybeard is right, I may get an A65 tank rubber under the front to lift it up a bit more. I hadn't really noticed it before! Well spotted guys!

If you've got an old inner tube, rubber glue like evo stick , and patience you cut pieces of rubber up and make a laminated rubber  spacer up any shape you want, that forms nicely around the top tube and can be held in place with cable ties, so no need to buy something  *smile*

The bike looks great, black is a classic colour for these bikes  *smiley4*

Very nice indeed, well done. I have an Indiana tank on my S/R , it also needed a bit of padding to get the right level, even my original tank was a bit crank!! The only faults I had were the badge indents were a bit 1st year panel beater and the brace stud positions under the tank was slightly wider, not really a problem.
Enjoy!
I like bike, especially my 61'SR

Saltbox Alf, oh yeah, tell me about it! The brace studs on my tank were positoned an inch out of line and when I went to tighten them up one fell off! I then had an interesting experience with a MIG welder and a tank full of petrol fumes, Thats why I'm bald! (my story and I'm sticking to it!)  *smile*

Great work mate, very nice.
Your anti theft method needs a bit of fine tuning. Most would know the plug lead goes to the plug. *smile*

Ha ha! good one musky!  *smile* The engine is soooo tight at the moment, I think that if they can start her, they have earned the right to steal her!

A little update: went for a ride at the weekend and managed 11 miles before I broke down, well, the bike broke down first, and then I did! It seems that the very expensive pattern magneto end cap I purchased was not holding the cam ring against the locating peg and decided to do some 'auto-retarding' of its own. I noticed the power dropping off until poor old Dorothy was not happy with a spark occuring halfway down the bores and stopped in a church graveyard!  *sad2* My travelling companion on his shiny new KTM suggested we find a freshly dug grave and finish the job fittingly. I can't print what I said!

It's so difficult to get good parts, eh guys?

Not a problem Topdad, the KTM fitted in his alimentary canal perfectly! (well after a little persuasion....) *eek*
