Greetings, another "Paul"
« on: 21.06. 2013 20:35 »
I'm new to this list, and hopefully the only "PaulM". I'm an old timer with bikes, Started with a Bultaco Metralla over 50 years ago. Recently I've had a bunch of "older BMW's, and just acquired a 1963 RGS.

Its a very pretty bike but only a garage queen, and never ridden. It dry sumps like a pig (new SRM oil pump on order), both the Mag and the Dynamo have failed (I suspect they never were good for the previous owner). Wrong Carb, wheel rims are "tweeked", and oil leaks every where.

So I have my work cut out for me.

Welcome to the forum, Paul. Is it a genuine RGS with A10 frame or a replica? If genuine it would be worth fitting the proper Goldie silencers.

Thanks for the kind words....

Frame number is GA10-168X. And based on pointers here in the forum, all the proper details seem to be in place. I'm waiting to hear from the BSAOC.

Interesting comment on the mufflers as I am not sure how the US models came equipped. I took the original "Western" handlebars off (but saved them) I'd welcome thoughts.

Hi Guys
Nice bike, it will be well worth while once it is sorted. That's how the US market Goldstar Twin was configures.  My friend has one that spec.  mine is the uk version.

Welcome to the best forum Paul. I have just fitted a new SRM pump, they are great but do not always prevent wet sumping due to the fact that there is another valve behind the oil pump. If you search the threads you can read all about it. Just put in wet sumping or SRM oil pumps, a font of all the wise men. Apart from that a great looking bike mate.

Well the devil is in the details. When I took the "western" handle bars off, I noticed two tiny screw holes on each side. I also found one of the two Cable Guides that is supposed to mount on the handlebars. That poster of a US model barely shows the throttle cable being run through the RH guide. Interesting detail (thanks!)

And thanks for the pointer on that check valve behind the oil pump. Its now on my list of things to get after.

The Aussie delivered RGS had the long cigar muffler as did the original one in the road test in 1962.

Ah, I didn't know the export ones had standard A10 silencers. I still think the classic Goldie ones would look nicer though!
