RGS advise/help sought
« on: 08.04. 2013 16:35 »
It would be appreciated is somebody can advise/help on the following questions with respect to a 63 RGS:

1. What are the correct Speedo and Rev Counter brk assys for the bike? It is my understanding they should be separate rubber mounting brks/assy? Does anybody have pictures of the assys and where would be the best place to source/get some?

2. Bike currently has rear-set front footrests which I would like to change to std. What is required to convert back to the std front footrests and can they be fitted? I understand that std A10 engine/gearbox plates should be fitted but can std front footrests be fitted with Siamese pipes and offside single G/S silence?

3. What is the correct Lucas headlamp switch? Original ones will clearly be difficult if not impossible to find/obtain so are there good pattern replacements?

4. What is the correct horn/dipswitch (and cut-out?)? Again original ones will not be available so are there good patten replacements?

5. The bike has a std RR2T gearbox and ratios and I believe a 23 tooth engine sprocket is fitted with std clutch sprocket, not sure if it is a 18 or 19 gearbox sprocket. In any event it is not going to be very user friendly on the road so what are to options available?

Is a complete st A10 gear cluster including main and layshafts required or can the original main and layshafts be used with just the gears replaced? The RR2T box should have needle bearings (main and layshafts?) So would these have to be changed to bushes and std main and layshafts as well as the gears be required or can the RRT2 shafts be used?

I understand that the 3rd gear has the same ratio as std, so can these be re-used? Would the engine sprocket need to be changed and if so to what size? What size gearbox and rear wheel sprockets should be used?

Are there any alternative options available like just changing the 1st gear pinions, assuming they would fit on the RR2T shafts?

Where would be the best place to seek/obtain any gears/shafts required?

6. Are there any parts books/list available that will cover the main cycle/engine parts used on the 63 RGS but also includes the specific parts used on the RGS versions?

Thanks

Hi Sprint,
I would recommend Autocycle Engineeering as they are probably the main suppliers to the trade, also Cake St Classics
I should be able to answer most of the gearbox questions over the next few days as I have just dismantled the RRT2 from my RGS
Q1, I believe the bracket in the attached pics are correct for the RGS speedo & tacho

Q2, Yes, the standard footrests will fit, difficult for some reason to find the correct left hand one, which is the one with the offset mounting hole (mirror image of the RH) earlier LH is straight,
You will also need a standard brake pedal, I may have a set spare???

Q3, I think this is the correct type, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390330894679?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649,
I need confirmation of this myself

Q4, open to the forum members ????

Q5,
Quote
The bike has a std RR2T
??? contradiction???
Ok, assuming RRT2 standard gears can be fitted to the RRT2 casing, If the std high speed gear (bushed)is used then a std mainshaft is needed
The RRT2 layshaft is needed to work with the needle roller bearings, Then the speedo drive gears will need changing to correct the ratio!!!!
Then to correct the shift pattern, a standard camplate is needed
Maybe a lot easier to find and fit a STD gearbox?????
American models (some) were fitted with an ARRT2 gearbox, which is a wide ratio box, STD2 is also a wide ratio box

Re gearing, Which size rear wheel sprocket is fitted? 42 or 46 teeth ?

Q6, Standard parts book plus the RGS suppliment book

Sprint:

If you don't already know these folks, I think you might enjoy meeting Andy at Leigh Classics. I think you are in East Sussex, so maybe they are not too far from you. Andy builds RGS replicas and keeps a large inventory of parts. I'd be surprised if he could not help with the gearbox parts.

Please tell Andy that Richard from Chicago says "hello."

Well answered, John.
That switch is the correct one and has a chrome plated bezel which fits between the nut and the panel.
The dipswitch/horn/cutout button is a Wipac Tricon.
The original has a chrome plated side, small dip lever & red & green buttons.
Pattern switches are available fairly cheap but have a black plastic side, large switch lever & red & black buttons.
Re the gearbox, I would fit a standard box, as John suggests, and forget about modifying the RRT2.

Hi John

Thanks for you detailed replies and photos which are very helpfull.

Converting the box back to std does seem a bit daunting at the moment as there is a knowledge base that I do not currently have, but it does not seem to be a simple operation? I need to better understand what is involved and the relevant costs and time involved are? Are std gear boxes readily available?

I will Autocycle a ring and see what they have to say.

If you do have any parts that are surplus to your own requirements please let me know?

Any further detail you can supply from your RGS box strip down would be appreciated.

Andy

Hi Trev

Thanks for your reply and suggestion about the box which may well be the easiest way out. At the moment I need to fully understand what all the implications are and what is actually involved in converting to a std ratio box?

Sprint,
I would think that you would need a complete gear set plus modifying the cases or at least custom made bushes in place of the needle bearings.
You would also need a new speedo drive.
Much easier to get another box and put yours on the shelf or sell it for really silly money.

You might want to check that it is a RRT2 inside! Wouldn't be the first time a standard box has had 'RRT2' stamped on it by somebody.... *eek*

Hi All,
Trev,
Do you know why the switch is Wipac when all the other electrics are Lucas????
