Changing pickup brush & ht lead

Hi all,

One of my pickup brushes has broken. I notice I can buy replacement brushes but with the conical shape of the spring, how easy are they to replace?

Also I'm renewing the ht leads and just wondering what's the best cabling I could use?

Be very, very carefull where you buy your brushes from. They are easy to fit but are all too often too hard or too soft, this will lead to a nightmare of strange problems occuring, which will drive you nuts. I cannot stress this point enough!............copper wire H.T. lead is the only option, no other will be any good.

I take it that it's a case of just pushing the spring in the opening?
Any websites, links for good brushes?

Hi Shaun,

I agree with Metalflake.  For the correct brushes I would suggest that you contact somebody who overhauls magneto's and guarantees his work.  Maybe somebody like Andrew at Priory Magneto's Ltd, Macclesfield.  He is on 01625 265185 and will probably be able to supply the HT lead also.

I'm pretty sure he has a website if you want to check him out.

Just checked out his website. Got a lot of stuff I need on there so will give him a ring.

Saying that, after the telling off I got from the wife today after she had to pick up 12 parcels from an eBay spree a may wait.

Hi there, also make sure the broken bit of the pickup brush isn't still inside the magneto or it will cause misfire, I think if you blow compressed air thru the hole that the pickup sits in with both pickups removed should do the trick. All the best, chicago

Wind the brush and spring clockwise as you remove it.
When fitting a new one, push the wide end of the spring into the pick-up at an angle, straighten and wind clockwise.
make sure that the spring bottoms on the contact point.
Use a multi meter to check continuity.
