Hello Everyone!
« on: 27.10. 2012 07:54 »
Hello all. My name is Paul and I'm pleased to be a member of this forum. I live in the Isle of Wight, England and have had a number of motorcycles over the (many) years.
Nowadays I have a 2001 Harley Sportster, a 1976 BMW R100RS, 2 Normans, a 1944 Autocycle/Autobyke & a 1957 200cc Trials machine and my lovely (well used) 1951 BSA Golden Flash.
The GF is as far as I can tell a one owner from new machine who's owner used it a main transport all his life. When he had small children he used a chair and as a solo subsequently. He sadly died in 1999 and his wife who died last year left it in his shed unwilling to sell it.
I bought it from their sons when the estate was disposed of. The GF is called Les in memory of its former owner.
I am having some troubles with it at present. I will not stop firing back through the carb, most annoying! It did not do this when I first bought it but it stared to do this latterly so I bit the bullet and sent the carb (pre mono) to Martin Bratby for re-sleeving/restoration and a lovely job he made of it but it still was farting and banging, have replaced the head gasket and two into one down pipes (these were held together with exhaust paste!) but still no joy. Bearing in mind she starts first kick and still does, no smoke or oil, I now suspect the magneto as the slip ring looks rusty on one side?? Grateful for your thoughts....
Anyway, enough of my moaning, I love old motorcycles and classic cars. I also own a 1957 Austin A35 Saloon and a 1985 Audi Coupe who's former owner was the legendary Spitfire ace and test pilot, Squadron Leader Nevil Duke. He held the air speed record in a Hawker Hunter for years!

Paul,
Hello and welcome! I'm a newbie myself, but the help I have had from these guys already is legendary! *smile*

Where do you put all those lovely vehicles??? My missus complains about my 2 bikes. Ha ha.

As regards your issues, yes I agree that the mag is a prime suspect, the last time I had issues like you describe I has some magnetised swarf floating about between the points, Blew it out with an air line and I was good to go! Could be an intermittant short on the points post too, but I'm betting you will find your issue under the mag cap somewhere.

G'day Paul, welcome to the forum.
Spitting back through the carb can also be a sign of weak mixture. Check float height and air leak at flange (spray WD over flange whilst running and listen for change of tune).
Interesting pipes.

Thanks everyone. Hey Stu, he's the very man I was thinking of for the Mag. Phil, I'll double check it & I'll try that Muskrat. The pipes were of the original owners making including the stainless silencer! He was an aircraft fitter.   *smile*

Just out of curiosity, the advise Muskrat gives always is WD40, why? Would Easy Start not be better?

Hi again all! I'm feeling a bit of a numpty now! Paul made a nice job of the Mag but I can't get the auto advance to go back against the taper on the shaft. Every time I try to fit it the points move and throws the timing out before I can tighten it. I have even removed the centre extraction bolt to try and push it against the taper but I just cant get it back to it??? Is it the new seal he fitted stopping it going back? Any ideas?

Hiya Wighty, I had a problem with mine like that, and if it's the same, initially had a piece of brass shim material to pack out the taper, but figured it was dodgy,(but good enough to confirm issue) and ended up carving with the dremel, some material from the casing behind the gear(about 20 thou I think),so it would fit snug on the taper.
 Hope that's helpful? cheers
