hi fella's, ive taken the timming case cover off again to sort out an oil leak and to change the dynamo chain and sprockets for a toothed belt drive conversion from srm, because after fitting new dynamo chain and sprockets, when half way round i ended up with massive slack on the chain, and when turned a further half turn the chain was badly overtight, i was aware that this kind of thing could happen due to poor manufacturing/bad centering but didnt expect it to be that bad.
anyway back to my original question...
while kicking the engine over slowly when checking for tightness/slackness of the dynamo chain i noticed oil coming out from inside the bottom of the timming case that houses the oil pump,

and after reading the "lubrication system service sheet 202" on this website.... http://www.classicrider.dk/english/technic/ServiceSheets.php  i was a bit worried.
it says....
" oil pressure is maintained at the big ends by the pressure release valve, when the pressure in the system exceeds 50/60 lbs per square inch, this valve opens and allows surplus oil to be passed into the bottom of the timming case"

so my question is this. should there be oil coming from the the bottom of the timming case when kicked over with the case off, or does this mean that there is a blockage in the oil way causeing the pressure release valve to operate, or could it be the pressure release valve at fault ???.
what do you think fella's.

Hi Chicago, I would expect there to be oil when you turn the engine over with the timing cover off but not sure why. I expect that a better man than I will explain.

I was interested that you are trying a SRM belt drive for the dynamo, do they do one for the long stroke as it has a shorter chain, 48 links compared to 52 ? Cheers, John

cheer's for the responce john, its a bit of an odd one really, as you wouldnt expect it to come out of there until the pressure built up, hope it is correct.

yes according to the guy i spoke to from srm the other day, they have a slightly shorter belt, unfortunately they didnt have any shorter belts in stock because they've used the ones they had on a few long stroke rebuilds theyve done recently. they guy from srm said he's going to order some shorter belts in and they should be in by next week. just hope i dont have any clearance issue's between the big pulley and the inner timming case as i would presume they will send me the standard size pulleys which they use for the short stroke i.e slightly bigger.

UPDATE....hi, ive had a closer look and the oil's coming from the oil pump drive spindle, then across the worm drive gear, and down the bottom of the crank,.

cheers fella's, so is this a normal thing ?. funny thing is ive had the cover off for about 4 days and not a drop of oil. it only leaks the oil when you kick the bike over.
