new A10 barrels and heads???
« on: 20.07. 2012 10:31 »
Hi!
Haven't been very active here for a while now, due to change of circumstances (profession), heavy workload, etc. etc. But wanted to let you know that I am still around and doing fine, as are the As, although they don't get used a lot these days...
Anyway, I just read this ad in the Gold Star magazine, does anyone know more? Sounds interesting.
Cheers, Markus

Markus,

First,  good to hear from you. Something in metalurgy,  I presume. Second,  if current news,  the availability of such castings should come as a relief to the group,  by knowing that we can keep 'em going.

Hello Markus, good to hear from you again.

The cylinders certainly look interesting and if the quality is good then there should be a market for them. It works out to about $950 AUS which is about what I would expect to pay for a new set of cylinders. The ones in the pic appear to be blanks but I assume they would come fully machined.

Hopefully more and more parts like these will come available and our bikes will still be ridden long after we are all gone. The more they are ridden the higher the demand for spares and that makes it viable for someone to remanufacture the necessary parts. A win win situation.

Yup they sure look the part, particularly if finished, doesn't say if they're cast in iron=10 kgs, or alloy, bearing in mind shipping all the way uphill to Oz, maybe the same $£$£ even in alloy?? Doesn't really matter though if they do the job?
Might make a phone call monday

Just called up and had a yarn with Mike Pipe, and he sounds like they've done a lot of work on these, in cast iron for now, reckon exactly like BSA or better and considering alloy depending on demand, they make ply boxes for shipping.
He gave me an email address and said ok to post on forum, which I'll do when I know I got it right.
 Cheers for now

Had a few goes, and finally called Mike again to email me. His email is:->
pimic1@aol.com

He has 10 sets of barrels ready to go

Hi Markus, good to hear from you again and with such interesting news particularly the RGS heads caught
my attention they could scuttle the plans of a few people on e-bay who seem to think original second hand alloy heads will fund there retirement in full! regards BobH

Hello Richard, well, I was more into mechanical engineering than metalurgy, but in the broadest sense you are right. With my current project I am fulfilling a live-long dream and have been starting my own restoration and engineering business in a 1000 sqm large, fully equipped workshop.
If you are curious, you might want to follow our progress on www.histo-tech.at

Err, oops, I hope this isn't considered illicit advertisement  *red*

Hi Markus, just had a look at your set up, very impressive  ,I can tell you're going to be the historic car and motorcycle equivalent of " the old machine company" based at Duxford . Best of luck with your venture BobH.

G'day Marcus, well done mate. Wish I had a setup like that near me. Great web site and I love the gear stick gate as emblem.
Best of luck with it.

Soon, you and your partner Ed will be buying classics and fixing them up on TV for quick money. (http://www.wheelerdealer.com/)

But, really, are you working or playing? I know I would love to play in that shop and forget that I had to earn a living.

Best of luck to you. Please risk being off-topic here to let us see some projects. e will let us know if it gets out of hand. Just always park your A10 next the car project.

Gents, thanks a lot for your encouraging words!
Whenever anyone of this forum happened to be nearby, feel bound to drop by for a drink of your choice!  *smile*

This reminds me of a nice feature on the AJMOC website: They have set up an assistance list for members. In case of a breakdown, you have online access to a list of members, sorted by country and region, and with information about available facilities (accomodation, garage/overnight storage, workshop, single/double trailer, towing), plus the full name, address and phone (preferably mobile) number.
That could be a neat idea for the member's section of this forum methinks??? Nice to know whom to call when you are stranded, especially in a foreign country. Just a thought, up for discussion (maybe start a new thread?). Of course we'd need to make sure the data is safe, since that is a LOT of personal information!

Nice one Richard!  *lol* I was well surprised when I first read your remark, because my partner's name is indeed Ed (or rather "Eddy")!!! (How the heck did you know???) Then it occured to me that you were referring to Ed China... Although I doubt that there is such a thing as quick money with restorations, especially if you take it seriously!
I have however imposed strict separation of "working" and "playing" upon myself, otherwise there is indeed high risk of frittering away time. So there's designated time to play, and designated time to "work" (although I don't feel it as such, MOST of the time at least).
I shall post pics of our projects on the website as we go along, so keep checking back! No need to spam the forum ;)

Julian, very impressive website and facilities, makes my old shack look like a chicken house... At least now I know whom to bother when it comes to pre-war parts. One can't have too many contacts and too wide a network! Website duly bookmarked  ;)

Thanks again, Bob, musky, Erling and Richard, for your supporting wishes, let's hope so, by goodness!!!  *smile*

Cheers and all the best, Markus

Many years ago, the Norton Owners' Club had a printed emergency aid list (just phone numbers) As I recall (probably incorrectly), it was fear of litigation that stopped it.

Having said that, other forums (like the Triumph Tiger triple list) do have a "help and cups of tea" section so shouldn't be too difficult.
