You can use mild steel without any problem ..leave it  a bit too big to allow manipulation then grind to size after welding .
I own a 1955/56 B.S.A Swinging Arm "Golden Flash" , had it since 1976 .

Heyup Bikerboy,

If you can get a template to me I'll see if I've got a suitable donor fin about the correct size.  If I have I could shape it for you then post it to you.

PM me if you need more information.

Beezageezauk.

i have an old bbq plate...its a bit better than 1/8 thick...
and being tapered...is a great match for ajs triumph and bsa head and cylinder fins.....
and theoretically a better match being cast iron...  ...i know mild steel works just as well..  but the tapered castiron saves me a bunch of grinding... i just braze it on...surpisingly easy... i use my little cutoffs as wedges to old the bits in alignment as the reconstruction is going on...
actually...got the bbq plate form the bottom of a destroyed house...the bbq er tried to get one too many uses out of a ratty propane hose...

G'day shuswapkev, welcome to the forum. 1/8" BBQ plate wouldn't last long down here. But good idea.
Say G'day & intro yourself in the app section.
Cheers

why wouldnt a bbq plate last long...

and the bits match the motor out in my shed

1/2 inch???
5/4 of us here in queensland have problems with fractions...
and nobody here in queensland could afford having that thick of bbq plate shipped in from china...
