3 spring clutch

This is slightly unrelated to my A10....I have a 1972 ish Triumph 500 Trophy/Trial/Adventurer depending upon where in the world it was sold. I can't get the nuts holding the spring in place undone. The threads are fine and I've managed to tighten them more without any problem, but I can't get them to undo. The spring seems to be working against the anti-clockwise action. of course I'm not using the correct tool, i don't have one. is there any particular trick or technique or should i should just get on with it and make the correct tool?

The nuts have a pip which catches in the end of the spring's last coil. Slip a knife blade between the spring wire end and the pip each time it comes around as you unscrew it, until it's loose enough to slip past.

that makes sense as to why I could tighten them more and not undo them...I'll try the knife trick if my wife doesn't catch me first with the knife,

so now I have the nut off, I can see exactly how it all goes together and its obvious how it dismantles when its all off..but... i could have spent days trying to figure all that out and no doubt broken a few a bits in the process. Many thanks Triton Thrasher!

one thing to look out for if you are replacing the springs is that some pattern springs are wound the wrong way and wont stay tight...............baz
