Rocker box gaskets
« on: 24.04. 2012 09:11 »
Hi All.
Now, I know that a lot of you have problems sealing the rocker box and making it oil tight and I have seen one bike that the owner has left out the gaskets altogether and sealed the offending article with Loctight 512 or some product like it but, he had to grind a bit off the tappet adjusting screws to clear the cover, now what about some solid copper gaskets to make this job easier? I know the ordinary gasket off the shelf move about and its usually a bugger to get them correct and you do need the space between head and rocker box, so I am off to the solid copper gasket guy today, to see what price he can knock me up some solid ones, these are cut out by water jet, if the price is o.k. I will get some made to see how they act, It just might solve one problem.
I would like to know how many of you would be interested in buying these, so let me know.

Kind regards TTJohn

Read here John http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php/topic,3385.0.html

I had trouble with mine and intend to try copper gasket, meanwhile I have cured the problem by making my own gaskets with gasket card and making them so that they fit and cover all the mating surfaces

They MUST be annealed properly. Heated to cherry red then quenched. It should be able to indent them with your finger nail.

G'day WozzA,
std paper gasket is 0.4mm. I got mine in 0.8mm to allow for years of lapping the head and box surfaces. It is handy being able to get them in different thicknesses to bring the geometry of the tappet and valve in line. At 1/2 lift the tappet should be in line and central to the valve stem. This is achieved by push rod length and rocker shaft height (gasket thickness).
Cheers

Muskrat.
Yes, thats the type of thing I want to do, good picture of it. Did you get the rear one also?  I don't think these need to be too thick I  would imagine half a mm should do the trick, its just that them ordinary gaskets you buy are pretty useless, when you have to move the rocker box around to get everything lined up, they normaly get mashed up somehow.
By the way if anyones interested I have justy had a batch of M20 head gaskets made (water jetted) using soft copper 1mm thick
they work out at £12 - 32 each plus p&p.

Regards TTJohn

 G'day TTJohn. Lani sells them in sets. Standard Gasket thicknesses are: .016,  .021,  .026,  .032,  .042,  .050,  .063,  .092, &  .125, thats in inches so 0.4mm is 0.016"
