G'day Malcolm,
the easiest way is to fit a dvr2 (or similar) regulator. Or get your dynamo re-wound for 12v. Most elect ign are 12 volt.
Make sure they are both the same polarity, +earth or -earth. 12v battery & globes.

Ideally, you should have both armature and field coil designed to deliver 12v. The problem with trying to use the standard equipment and a 12v regulator is that the dynamo doesn't start to produce enough voltage (14v.) until about 2000 r.p.m. which is no good if you're doing slow speeds with lights on. If you're tinking of going to 12v. just so you can fit electronic ignition think carefully about the total cost involved and the fact that you will need total confidence in the reliability of your charging system, and a good battery at all times, to keep the ignition system running. I confess I have a business interest in magnetos and dynamos and my preference is to stick with the magneto as I can kickstart the bike regardless of battery condition.

Hello Malcolm

I would also say fit a DVR2 and run your standard E3L dynamo at 12 V. Forget the Prince of Darkness stuff. Lucas dynamos are robust and reliable long life equipment if you look after them.

If you go to electronic ignition and feel the need for more low speed charge a belt drive kit for the dynamo is available from Dynamo Regulators Ltd to increase dynamo speed by 20 %. Please visit http://www.dynamoregulators.com/drive-belt-kit.php for much more on these subjects, see especially http://www.dynamoregulators.com/documents/improved%20charging%20BSA%20A7-10.pdf (shameless links to my company's website)

Mind you the belt drive gives benefits over the standard chain whatever you demands on the dynamo. A big boost to overall reliability. You will even be able to confidently use your Flash with lights  *smiley4*

Big advantage of the standard dynamo at 12 V is higher available power output, and thicker wire is more robust. Standard parts are available from many sources when it comes to spares.

Cheers
Mike
