That's one way of looking at it of course. Personally I think it's best to leave it as a voluntary payment. If there are a few freeloaders on the forum so be it. They are around aren't they, but I very much doubt we have many 'active' contributors like that. Everyone can kick in what they think is a fair thing. The non-active people who just 'dip-in' now and again can have the freebie and enjoy the absolutely scintillating conversation.

I sometimes have a quick dekko at other forums (apart from my regular 1/2 dozen), just for a little look, perhaps to clarify something simple, but wouldn't 'join up' because I may only spend 10 minutes on it in a year.

Just IMHO.

G'day Ian.
On the "books" we have 1264 members but a lot haven't been seen for years. In the last 12 hours there has been 52 members and 188 visitors. On average we get 200 new members a year. I have no idea how much it costs to keep us afloat. I just throw in what I can ( I haven't had any income for 3 months!). If your a pensioner $10 ia a lot, if you earn $2K a week a "Jolly Green Giant" ($100) or two is nothing.
Jools got in while I was typing and agree with him.

G'day Shark.
One of the old timers usually throws a reminder out around New Years.
Any donation is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

To me it seems fairer that we all pay a very small amount than just a magnanimous few carrying the load? Like insurance but much cheaper!
Seems very sensible but it would be a shame to deter newcomers who may not recognise the value of membership.
Admin, would it be possible to show a message asking for donations when someone logs on? Wikipedia do that. It would be annoying if it happened constantly but maybe once in a while.

There we go, did my bit for now. Happy to do something for the site as it has since the help here is tremendous.
I administer a classic motorcycle forum here and funding questions are hard to figure out sometimes so for the most part I have kept everything paid up but I won't live forever.

I've just upped my monthly standing order to $3. That's about 30 Sterling per year. Well worth it too!

Thanks to all who provided something and anything. It'a a big help, both for the forum's basic costs keeping it online, and for my positivity regarding the work of trying to provide the best, most usefull, most helpful forum experience.

As mentionned, any eventual extra funds, after the foum basics are covered, gets 're-paypall'ed' to worthy causes closely related to the existence and running of the forum (all freely (hoping for donations) providing services and programs like the forum software itself, the developpers of webtools used to set up, to maintain, to modify, to make safety backups etc).

Hello, running a free, no adverts forum with high quality hosting \ speed \ reliability \ great up-time implies non-avoidable, regular expenses, in money and time. The donations has been varying each year, from good - adequate - minimal.

But for a good while now, next to nothing... (apart from Greaybeard's monthly 3 usd, thanks for that).

I would feel greatful (and inspired to continue working) if those getting satisfaction and help from the forum would consider a little paypal contribution now and then. But I understand, one gets very used to 'much\all is free on the net'. As it stays right now, it's kept online mainly due to my personal contributions. This in addition to the time and work needed to keep it all in top shape technically, and to ensure the forum stays a high quality resource covering our members's hobbies and interests in the best and most satisfying way possible.

Thanks for reading.

Yep, will contribute of course (My problem is I can never remember when I last donated).
Can I suggest including a link to the paypal account when it's mentioned, (just saves searching - gooder for us with worser braincells!)

Yes folks, please recognise how good this forum is. A monthly standing order makes it affordable to donate and you do not need to remember when you last gave.
