A10 carb ideas please

a carb question. 1952-4 A10 plunger iron head, currently the chop has a 376/80 monobloc fitted.
getting ready to go for a mot but not happy because throttle action is sticking. when you look at the top of the carb its a tight fit and the cable is very restricted. running drip tray and 1/8 inch heat spacer. there is no room for a filter.

can anyone suggest an alternative concentric, may even look at running a twin carb head instead.
also if I have to stick with the mono, is it the right one. thanks

Does the cable have adjuster on carb end, if so put it at throttle end. my A10 plunger 276 carb is set up that way. Try amal on internet to find concentric carb

Hi, No adjuster at carb end there is no room, the ferrule has a hard bend to fit in.
it is a 376 so is it taller than a 276?

have tried burlen again but they just list 276ER/1DB no specs.

anyone have a spare I could try

I have plunger A10's with concentrics and monoblocs fitted and they are both fine. There is not a lot of room on either but enough.

I think the 276 may be slightly lower but monoblocs where standard fitment on the 55' 56' and 57' plunger models, not sure about 54' as thats the one year I dont have, 53' had a 276.

Its dark here now but tomorrow when I get home I could take a photo of both if you like.

According to the Amal reference catalogue 52 was 276ER/1DB. The overall dimensions are 5.7 inches for the 276 and 6.17 inches for the 376. All the best.

thanks ror the replies, what is the comparrison like between the 276 and 376? I know the 276 has a remote carb but is there any difference in performance? just wondering why the 376 was fitted, better spares availability or reliability??
if a decent 276 is as good as the 376 fitted I may go that option for a smoother throttle action

What the pic is showing is an adjuster screwed all the way in ????
Theres a little top hat ferrule available that sits down into the carb top and the cable ferrule sits into this
this will give you more room

unfortunately the little ferules are a tad bigger than the hole for the adjuster ( a different carb top was used).
Possible ways forward
Grind the ferrule down a bit - I did this, watch your fingers on the grinding wheel?
Drill out the carb top
Buy a new carb top, they are available for either adjuster or ferrule - but £15 ish each.

I'm also thinking of a Tuffnel spacer, modified to take some of the downdraft off the carb,  this is on a S/W arm alloy head so might well be a bit different on a plunger though

             The plunger A10 used a 276 carby until the end of production.
The Amal list has an error in that it shows the plunger model with a Monobloc and the swinging arm with a 276!

Just had a look at that Trev, it looks like they have transposed the two lines. Just goes to show that even original factory literature has mistakes.
