Clutch centre bearing
« on: 24.01. 2011 14:52 »
Whilst I have the engine in bits been looking at the clutch because there is some rocking in the clutch chain wheel. The rear corks are worn but I also wondered about the centre bearing ( the two row ball bearing type). I have a new spare one but it is slightly different. The one thats in has a plain inner ring but the spare has a slight off set and a shield one side but not the other. Anyone any thoughts on this. Thanks

The ball bearing assembly is there to support the chain wheel, not the center; that's supported by the gearbox mainshaft.
There should be no wobble in the clutch assembly until the clutch lever is pulled in. If it otherwise wobbles (when the clutch is engaged), then the centre is loose on the mainshaft or the output bearing in the gearbox is shot or loose in gearbox bore, in which instance something is amiss.

Why not consider fitting the new bearing design? Must be a vast improvement over the old one.

I put one of those new design ones in my B31 and it definitely seems better. Anything that helps that particular design of clutch has to be good.
