Down pipes
« on: 27.11. 2010 10:12 »
Hey guys,
It's been a long time since I got on here-too busy working to mess with my bikes but I finally got down to working on my flash and even tho' it looked 'flash' when I got it, there was a bunch of stuff to straighten out before it started behaving like one.I swapped out the oil tank for a proper A10 one, replacing the B31 oil tank that came with the bike, got the clutch fixed with some new plates and springs, put drain plugs into the forks-found out there were none in them after topping them up with oil *conf*. Then I found the timing out, the cam ring in the magneto was worn, fixed that with a cam ring from SRM. After that fix, the timing was still dodgy. Over to the ATD, found that a mess. Refurbished the unit with new springs and replaced the worn riveted spindles that the springs hook onto. The timing was spot on after that and the bike runs great.

I need a set of down  pipes for the bike now-they have Triumph pipes on them at the moment. There is a set of pipes on flea bay and they are described as pipes for a super rocket, I'm also interested in the inner and outer timing cases (super rocket) that is also for sale. I'm wondering whether the pipes and the cases would work on my 1953 plunger flash. Any advice would sure be appreciated.

Here is the ebay link in case someone else on here is looking for super rocket stuff:

G'day Hank,
the timing covers will fit, not sure about the pipes as they would be for a swingarm.
Cheers.

Hi Hank,

I'm with Muskrat on this one.  As a Super Rocket is a swinging arm model I'm sure the downpipes for a s/a are different to those on a plunger.

The answer with the exhaust pipes is yes and no. Plunger pipes are not directly interchangeable with swing arm ones, but.......

If you are going to buy pipes then you need to buy plunger ones. If you have a set already then you can change them to fit either. The difference is the mounting bracket and you can change that. Here is a picture of my 61', the pipes on it are plunger ones. If you are ok with welding then its easy to change the mounts.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. I think I'll keep a weathered eye opened for a set of plunger pipes for now and run the bike on it's existing pipes. By the way Brian that is one fine looking machine!

while not technically a swing arm or a plunger, the late siamese pipes rgs type were a lovely stock fit to my bb32r replica - supplied by draganfly with goldie type tail pipe

G'day RR,
looking good. *yeah* That would have to be your passengers bike in the background, with a # plate like that.
Cheers

well spotted! he also has a pair of severed hands attached to the back of his bike.
Not my usual passenger though, but did a good job as a stand in.

I was planning to migrate these pipes to my hack solo a10 project, but they are certainly getting the power out. I did shorten them slightly to raise the peak power, according to my sums they could be shortened more, but she sails straight past 7k very willingly and I'll need to keep my eye on her as I think she'll happily over rev.
