Hi Screw

Welcome to the forum. I spent ages trying to get a rack for my SR and I started a topic somewhere about last Autumn. I tried to contact Craven but they are out of business and the new company who bought the rights say they will start manufacturing again but they are not sure when. Some of the modern racks made now for the S/A Bonnies could be adapted but they are quite expensive and will need new powder coat or chrome when modified.
In the end I set up a search with email reminders on ebay and got a 70s Craven rack, top box and panniers from a Commando which look really smart and not out of place even though they are probably about 10 - 15 years newer than the bike. It sits a bit high and forward if mounted direct to the top of the shock mountings using small cranked brackets so I am making some L shaped brackets with spacer washers to set it back and down a few inches to clear the shocks and the top of the rack will sit level with the top of the seat. It will also allow the panniers to sit closer to the back wheel so they do not stick out too far. The brackets pick up the two shock top mounting bolts and the toolbox and oil tank mounting bolts just in front. You will need to remove the lifting handle on the left but you can use the rack to help lifting onto the centre stand. All I need to do is make up some cranked strip metal brackets to fit the back end to the rear mudguard mountings.
Not sure whereabouts in the world you are but I have read somewhere on the forum that other owners have made racks from welded tube similar to the originals - I think they were in the US. Being as I am still a novice with the MIG welder I am using flat steel strip to mount the Craven.
The biggest problem you will find with second hand racks are that they almost always come with no fittings so you will have to be a bit inventive when mounting it.

I will post some pics when mine is finished

I looked for ages to find one to fit the Velo as I hate riding with rucsacks etc. Eventually I found something close to what I wanted at an autojumble and made new mountings out of flat steel strip and steel tube. It was easy enough - I MIG welded mine although just bolts would have been fine. And best of all the whole thing only cost me around £20.

Foolishly I left it on the Velo when I sold it* so now have to go through the whole procedure again.....

*Mind you, the chap who bought it did say how nice the rack looked.

thanks, Lawnmowerman [very inventive name] and Iansoady, mine sits high and rearwards. not the ideal solution, but it works ,after a fashion. sounds like trawling the autojumbles, and watching the bike mag adverts. I live in West Yorkshire by the way, and we have almost no classic bike traders anywhere near, so we are at the mercy of the postal system for almost anything for BSAs.Good forum , all same. enjoying the experience.

Amongst a lot of other interesting stuff some nice looking racks on this site, sorry don't have time to find dimensions but the racks seen have little in the way of brackets leaving them suitable for modification.
Also UK made tank knee grips,  ebay item No 200519196369, goto the shop and browse through, lots of bling as you might expect from a scooter shop, location given is Burton, any connection with Burton Bike Bis I wonder
All the best - Bill
1961 Flash - stock, reliable, steady, fantastic for shopping
1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco

£175 "buy it now" seems a bit rich for an A10 rack even if it is genuine. It has not even got the magic RGS letters after it  *smile*
I am sure there are enough people on the forum who could make some for a lot less than that.
Anyone interested in making a dozen? - there seems to be a market among our members.

I do not know if it is still the case, but C&D Autos used to have A10 specific racks in for sale. Advertised as bolt on, no drilling required

If anyone was thinking of making a batch I would be interested in one.

I did see a photo of a RGS with a Givi rack on it, they do a universal fitting kit. Strangely, it didn't look that odd despite the modern design.

I too would be very interested if anyone was prepared to make a batch.
I'm just about to get myself a welder (another story altogether!) but I know it'll be ages before I am able to weld halfway competently.

You guys all sound incredibly able in most departments - I'm feeling wholly inept.

HI All,
I'm reasonably sure the ebay one is one of the C&D Autos racks
they are fine but I think a bit big looking on the sportier models!!
On another BSA forum there's a similar thread going on and this guy was mentioned as someone who makes batches of tubular products for various clubs etc

His name is Patrick Meeth's and his telephone number is 01934 416642 (Weston-Super-Mare).

I know nothing at all about him and am only passing on the name and number to see if it helps

Interesting - Thanks for that John.

I think I'll get in touch with Patrick and see if he can cut the mustard!
