John,
I have an explanation for the differing left hand "tubes"
1954-57 has a different left hand rest to 1958-63.
If you compare the two, you will see that the late one is almost similar to the right one in that it projects out before turning forward.
The early one projects forward from the end of the "tube".

I have great luck finding parts at www.draganfly.co.uk

If you don't have any luck there I may have a set they are a little bent but should be able to be straightened. Will check and let you know

HI Bob,
The footrest story gets more and more complex *conf* *conf* *conf*
As Trev says different lengths of tube for different years
Last week I rang Steve at Yeomans in the hope that he might be able to find and bring the LH 42-4854 to Founders Day
on Sunday.
He brought two sets of footrests as removed from different BSA's (maybe singles???)
Each set had the right hand 4804 rest and the left on one had the flat rest with cutaway (plunger B31/33)
The other had a flat type without the cutaway

The question now is??
Were the LH footrests fitted to A's that were fitted with the Ariel type hubs different to the later A's?

Anyway if these sets will suit your bike phone Steve at 0121 4538886

Hi John,

The left hand items fitted to the A10's with Ariel Type hubs (1956/57) were 42-4840 for the footrest and 65-4811 for the distance piece.

The later equivalents (1960 onwards) were 42-4854 for the footrest and 42-4857 for the distance piece.

Unfortunately I don't have the part numbers for the 58/59 A10's but the parts list for the 58/59 B31 and B33 shows 42-4854 for the footrest.  I would presume that, as most cycle parts were the same for the A and B series for 58/59, the A10 would have used the 42-4854 left hand footrest for these years.

John,
One set of left hand rests for 1954-57 and the other set from 1958-63.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, since I'm new to the forum please let me know if I should post it somewhere else. Since the topic is footrest, is there a preferred or correct positioning? I'm getting ready to mount mine on my 57 A10, there seems to be a lot of variance with so many splines.

Welcome 57BSA  and unless someone knows of other reasons I think you just put the peg wherever it feels most comfortable remembering you have to operate the foot brake and gear lever, also the the foot brake will operate a little bit differently with the peg in different positions so you may have to re-adjust the rear brake.

Thanks, that is what I thought. I will try several postion to see what feels the best. This will sound like a stupid question but it has been almost 40 years since I rode this bike - what is the shift patter? 1 down 3 up etc?????

Yes one up three down and up to change down , down to change up.
So from neutral up to first, gently down to find neutral, down for second, down again for third, down for fourth (top)
Until you get used to riding again you sometimes might find a false neutral between other gears than first and second.
Also you will find many post on the forum regarding difficulty finding neutral, one tip is to select it while on the move other things to consider are clutch adjustment, proper lever.
Don't let all this put you off though, you have a great bike that will give you endless pleasure - get those pegs on and get it out for a spin

Thanks for the information - I have a new post about cylinder head torque value that I going to ask over in the Tech Tips.
