Petrol Tap thread sealer
« on: 03.04. 2010 18:01 »
Could anybody point me in the direction of a suitable sealant to use when re fitting petrol taps to the tank? I was going to use PTFE tape but I have a feeling that it would just go gooey when in contact with the petrol.... *sad2*

Hi, discussed many times (try search). f. ex. see here.

Fiber washer (if needed to get alignment right), and a small amount of loctite 243 (thread lock, blue) on threads\surfaces to secure and leakproof it. Guaranteed.

Thanks for moving my topic to the right place and also advice that followed - the Loctite option is the one I will go for and thanks again *smiley4*

Just a thought, some taps are flimsy cast items, so the locking effect of 243 may lock too well and cause a tap to crack when removing one. I've had one snap. If you use brass ones all will be fine. However, I now use good old red Hermatite which is petrol resistant (or at least appears to be!).

I've used Loctite 222, did a great job.
