55 Plunger Flash Resto
« on: 23.03. 2010 18:56 »
I thought I would upload my resto pictures as I go along. Starting with the full bike before strip. My resto plan is to remove the engine and store under the bench and do this last. The bike has been stripped and the plan is build the wheels and repair the forks and plungers. Get these back on the bike with the wheel in order to move the frame in and out the garage. The second phase is to repair the mud guards and panels. First picture is bike on arrival on 19 Dec 09.
The second picture shows the frame stripped and primed, waiting for paint and a visit to Carlisle to match paint and take the tank to Cumbria Plating. Ordered wheel rims and spokes - 5 week lead time! Bearings arrived but are HMEC and not sure these are of the correct quality so not sure I should use them.

Next phase; base coat of Vauxhall Sovereign Gold, finish needs a flatting and another 3 coats plus a clear coat. Tank is at the platers don't know yet if it can be filled and plated or if its too thin. Wheel rims and spokes have been ordered. Should be here in a week or two.

Stu,
I will be keen to see how your restoration goes as my 51 gold flash is in similiar condition to yours and I will be starting my restoration sometime in the next year, or 2 or 3.  As you can tell there's no hurry.
Some hints on what and what not to do as you go will be appreciated.

Cheers Russ

latest Update

The frame and first batch of painting is complete. Just enough to get the plungers and forks back together. The plungers went back together without the special tool. Had to make a tool for the forks using one of the old fork top caps welded to a length of threaded bar in order to put the fork legs up into the top yoke. I found it difficult to do without scratching the paint. I then masked up the frame to keep the dust off only to remove it later to find it marked the lacquer. I then had to do it all again.  I used new seats and ball bearings in the yokes. The wheels have been built with new chrome rims and stainless spokes and new sealed bearings. I didn't realise the rims where handed and had to build the front twice. The dimples are drilled slightly differently one way which is hard to spot - 1mm difference. The next job is to buy some tyres - Dunlop k70s front and rear. The 3rd batch of painting is to do the mud guards, petrol and oil tank and tool box. The petrol tank is too far gone to rechrome - too many deep rust pits. Intend to paint it until I can source a reasonable replacement. Looking forward to the engine rebuild - had enough of painting!

Like the ring protectors, I'm guessing some plastic drainpipe or similar?

Nice so far

Thanks for the comments. Ring compressors are gray plastic duct, a bit more flexible than down spout. Will post some more at end of week.

Nealy there. MOT booked next Sat 10am. Bike still running a little hot and LHS header is more blue than the RHS so think I need induction bias washer. Need to lift the carb needle to the last slot. Also to do finish the tank lining, some sort of air filter, rear brake switch is not turning off properly so have to do this for the MOT. O and need LHS rear foot peg so will fabricate one this week.
