the effects of winter on Alloy

I decided I would not take the bikes out since they put salt/grit on the roads,due to the effect it has on the chrome and Alloy, also due to the cold weather I put four bikes in the wooden garage, just erected and not yet insulated so as to be able to use the gas space heater in the workshop without fear of petrol fumes etc. getting me into trouble.
Imagine my dissapointment  (when I removed the cotton cover to show a friend the bike and saw the oxidisation on most of the alloy parts, I just hope i can manage to clean it off without to much trouble, Any helpfull suggestions ?  and if so could you pop around and show me how to do it ? wink2

Some autosol, some elbow grease, and lots of beery lubrication. Works for me

hi richard sorry to hear about your alloy thats condensation for you i had my
bsa in a concreat  garage and had the same trouble so i put a oil radiator in there
worked a treat little beads of water on everything hope you sort it

I had the same problem Richard, I intended to insulate the roof which was metal but in the end I did the walls as well.
The roof was the source of condensation but doing the walls as well means a small tube heater is all that is required to keep it at well above freezing (got the tatties stored in there also).
I used roof insulation covered with cheap polytarp stapled to the walls (like a quilted effect) to stop it sliding down, looks a bit like a padded cell now but it is snug

Thanks fella's but no offers to show me how to.
I did intend  to insulate the walls and roof but this was put up in the front garden on 22nd December  and in January I had the enforcement officer from the planning dept, result of a townie moving in to the new houses oppisite with a view straight in to the bungalows bedrooms, the reason for erecting it in the first place, wanting to know if I had got planning, result is that work is on hold until retrospect planning is gained, made of wood and free standing it is only 3.6 metres deep 3 metres high and 10.2 metres long with two open bays and one with double door front, looks smart.
as for elbow grease no problems but as for the beer to cold for that at the moment.
I will not get a chance to do anythig until Saturday as Peter Sole's funeral Friday.
If anyone of you knew him and want some more details email me, I will reply to any tomorrow

28 deg' here today Richard, prefect day for a beer and polish...

I had a similar issue during a car restoration, nice garage, insulated roof... but the floor was a concrete slab on an ill prepared surface.
I have since moved further north and no longer have cold winters but do have humidity by the bucket load. My new garage is completely encased in a waterproof bladder and all concrete used has a liquid waterproofing agent added, no more problem.
According to the experts the problem with my old garage was the floor not the above ground structure.

Darren   good point once the planning has gone through i will concrete the floor, just gravel at the moment, but will be putting a membrane down.
