Petrol leaks

I have read on some earlier threads that PTFE tape can be used over the threads on the tank and fuel tap fittings but there are two types of tape - water and gas and I am not sure which type to use. I have fitted the Dowty washers with rubber inserts under the flanges (difficult to find in imperial sizes)  but the petrol still seems to be weeping down the threads.
Is there a better sealant to use which is available in the UK?

Jim,
I also tried PTFE tape, but that didn't seal the threads very long. What I use now are hemp fibre and sealing compound for gas pipes. Just ask your local plumber, usually you can get some for free there.

Have used Loctite 222, 569 would be a better choice from what I've been told, but 222 did the job.

PTFE, I would not use this.

I can recommmend "Dirko" sealant, it seems impervious to nearly everything

this is what the blurb says,
