A good trick for a flogged 1/4 bsf or cycle tapped hole is to go 7mm fine. It's 1mm pitch so 25.4 tpi and over a short tapped hole the difference is insignificant. 7mm is close enough to 6.35mm (1/4") as to not stand out to much but will rescue the hole without drilling out to a 5/16".
Pretty sure though that all the cover screws on my machine are 1/4 whit.

I needed to replace a couple of knackered 5/16" x26 TPI nuts today...fat chance thought I but wait what are these? Aha 5/16 UNF which is 24TPI I wonder?... After I'd run a 5/16 x 26 CEI Tap through them - Perfick!  *good3* (non safety critical I hasten to add)

Ian, you can get as many of those nuts that you want from Classic Fasteners in your neck of the woods.

Thanks Trev, yes I know Classic Fasteners, they're great but I only needed a quick two off! (attaching the fuel tank stiffening strap underneath)
Cheers
