Gearbox sprocket removal

A10 std box out of frame.

Sprocket nut has two slots and I cant see theres a two prong tool?

So do you remove nut by locking teeth on sprocket and using a drift or something else.

there should be a lock washer punched into one of the slots get that out then punch off the nut once it has loosened it should spin off

You use a C spanner.  A universal angle grinder spanner may fit or one from an old bike set but it may be too soft.

Normally take the sprocket off before removing box from frame. The recommended tool is a soft iron drift. Tightening is with a drift as well, as it needs the shock caused by impact to get it tight enough.

I do have a bronze drift but I'm hesitant to bash away too hard when the load is being taken by a ball race.  If I can I like to get this type of thing tight with a pipe over a C spanner or wrap it in some ally and get Stilsons on. Perhaps one final tap.

Hi All,
I found a near enough sized piece of steel pipe, cut awayoine wnd to leave two tangs protruding that would fit into the slots on the nut, I found a big nut that more or less fitted into the other end of the tube and welded that in place leaving most of the hex available for a spanner
Like others I do not like hitting shafts etc that are suppoorted by rolling bearings

G'day Nic.
I have done similar to John ^^. A pipe long enough to fit over the main shaft, A socket welded on the end to use a 1/2" drive rattle gum and a large socket ground off to give the two pegs welded to the other end. ( I have the same for the HD sprocket nut).

Cheers for the replies I have some c spanners about for boat engine stuff but not here
also like the make a tool idea as I have a great mig welder!
