Very early Indian
« on: 07.01. 2025 11:28 »
When I was a kid and there were loads of cowboys and Indian films on TV we called the 'baddies' Indybums. Times have changed.

This machine really is a motorised bicycle.

Wow that's early, I wonder what year?
More of a moped as you can power it via the pedals until the motor hopefully takes over on the other side. presumably the pedals can freewheel  *eek*

They weren't thought of as "mopeds" as that term hadn't been invented yet.
It's just the way bikes were started in the days before clutches, gearboxes and chain drives.

Regarding Indybums, someone huffed off of a group I on recently as someone termed his Chief an "Injun" which he considered to be a reference to cowboys films of the 1950s etc and far too racist to be countenanced.

Q. The reason?
A. There's too many chiefs and not enough injuns!   *shh*

There was some similar nonsense about the use of the terms "master and slave cylinders"  *razz*
But back to the bike; no sign of a clutch and its chain drive so no belt slip to get you going.
Looks like you pedaled up to speed and got the engine going on the stand then launched yourself forward!  OK on dirt roads perhaps?
Perhaps you stopped on a de-compressor? Its before traffic lights and stop signs so perhaps you started the engine when you set off and stopped it when you arrived?

https://williameggersmotorcycles.com/2013/03/10/1905-indian-camelback-single/ . . .  Suggests 1905?
Dunno the exact procedure, with or without decompressor, to get off the mark. Hard work, though, as all veterans are. Those pioneers were intrepid.
Good pic of a very blingy museum one in wikipedia too, but not identical in the downtube area  . . . Where it says '260cc,  130lbs, speed 30-35mph'

Nice diversion of a filthy wet morning when even the dog won't go out.

Speaking of Injuns. I recently had a discussion with a customs agent about “what I thought I was importing and how could I be abusing animals like that”. The item description was Petcocks. Stupid little twenty year old girl. Can’t even understand English!

The Indian and other machines of that day were mostly as thought, start it and stop it when you arrived. Not meant for rolling through town on
