Pattern parts problem - oil tank filter
« on: 30.11. 2024 23:33 »
I went to change the oil on the RR project after an initial rev up in the garage. Before refilling the tank I thought I'd treat the new bike to a new stainless oil tank filter. The new filter is shorter than the original one. This causes a problem which is that it does not engage with the pipe in the tank until you've started screwing the nut into the tank. The problem with this is that, because these things are flexible there is the danger that it doesn't align with the oil pipe so you end up screwing it in and crushing the gauze because the hole in the brass enclosure on the end of the gauze hasn't lined up with the pipe in the tank. The original filters had a conical enclosure on the end of the gauze which self-aligned onto the pipe and you could feel it slide over the pipe before engaging the threads on the nut. I've also noticed that the brass end on the pattern ones has a hole in it which is slightly too large so I've pushed an O-ring onto the pipe before fitting the filter, and checked that the filter slides over the pipe by pointing a torch down the filler hole.

In your shoes I’d keep on using the old one.

G'day CB.
I agree with TT. Give the old one a good clean & inspection.
NOS is like rocking horse poo these days so we have to recommission what we have.
Cheers

The old one is damaged, beyond repair. It's OK to use the pattern one provided you check, with a torch, that it has aligned with the oil pipe and close the end a bit better with an O ring. Not ideal, but needs must.
