Gearbox Indexing Problem

Help Please *help*

Attached is my 62 A10 GF Gearbox with the front cover removed, as you can see the Dots on the quadrant are not aligned, even though I was sure she was in neutral *sad2*

How can I resolve this please?

OK guys I'm not sure if I've done right, but I inserted the gear change and believe I now have it in neutral. Looking at the two marks, they seem to be almost in-line. Now I've read on another thread about a number of rogue quadrants and it's possible to change the index position by one tooth to get the marks to the align exactly. As my gearbox is a late one 1962, do you know if the rogue quadrants were around at that time?

The reason for removing the front cover was because gear selection was difficult, changing up was OK but changing down was a lottery. It seemed like the gear lever wouldn't return to it's central position, so I suspected the return spring. Just now without the front cover on, the selection was much easier and positive.

I have never dabbled with Pre-unit gearboxes, only Unit ones, so I'm a bit of a novice. Sorry about that BSA Singles a piece of cake, this one I'm on a learning curve and I need some guidance *problem*

Terry that looks wrong to me you will have to take the inner cover part way off , not much because the quadrant drops loose  then make sure you are in neutral and line up the dots, the dots COULD just be a tad out of line in neutral but not much. RRT2's are loads of fun NOT!!  but it was to me until i got it right. *problem* on second thoughts it could be right and just that little bit out you will have to try it. good luck

Hi Terry, and All
Use a big screwdriver or lever and move the quadrant through its range while turning the shafts to help engage the gears.
You should be able to find 4 gears and neutral
This is only possible when the quadrant is correctly engaged!
The index mark is nearly always off a bit one way or other

Even though the gear change was difficult, if you could engage all four gears, the quadrant alignment is OK. Don't take the inner cover off! Your problem is more likely to do with the gear lever pawls or bushes not aligning as well as they should, causing stiffness.

Thanks for the advice boys and I have spent time now with just the quadrant, changing gear up and down and apart from the occasional jump from 1st to 2nd all gears seem to engage positively *smile*

So I'm off to Kempton next week and I will change out the return spring and spring behind the selector. I will also check out CheezerBeezer's comment about bush alignment making the gear spindle stiff, I believe the bush in the front cover has been replaced. Let you know how I get on thanks *yeah* *wave*
