Centre stand
« on: 25.11. 2024 15:43 »
Hi All
Any ideas to whats going on with my Centre stand. I appears to be connected to the frame with just an iron rod and split pins . Have tried drifting it out to no avail.
Thanks

I am not an A10 expert but that is how my centre stand is fitted. There is a spacer in the middle (tube). Like mine it looks like the iron rod has seized in the stand with all the turning taking place in frame, a real bugger as the stand will never be right even if you take it all apart and free it up.  The worn hole will always be a rattling fit.  This causes the stand to swing too far back and does not lift the rear wheel off the ground. Worse still because it swings too far back it is a bugger to get off the stand.

I cured this problem on my Triumph by building up weld material on top of the stand where it lands on the frame.  A bit of a hit and miss affair. I carefully measured mine had too much weld laid down only to fine it was just enough. Just glad I didn’t grind it down.

Plan to do this on my BSA this winter.

You might free it off with some penetrating oil. If you heat the stand up where the pin goes through you're also in with a chance but beware of setting everything on fire because it's very greasy down there! When you get the stand off you can weld some wide spacers on the outside of the original lugs and use a longer rod.

it might be so badly worn the pin has a shoulder preventing it from coming out try turning the pin and make sure the stand spring is off to jiggle it about

Agree, try turning the pin before going further, that will give you some idea what the prospect is for getting it out.  Could be rusted in the stand or the tube.  Pins a re cheap and east to get so if its seized (as opposed to having a wear step) saw it off between the frame and stand (obviously taking care not to saw into the frame) and get it all on a bench.
An alternative would be to saw the tube and pin in the centre, less risk to the frame but it may not come out.  A new pin will fix a lot of the play as the pin seems to wear the most.
Once its out you have options, one is to ream the holes and stand to the next std size and make a new pin from some silver steel rod.

Looks like that pin is on borrowed time so a cheap sacrifice as suggested by Rob. If you have a welder, tack on something at each end to give a purchase to get it to move, the heat will help. But observe CB's caution. Then if it loosens off, cut off the additions and see if it will drive out. Berg's also on the money here.

No luck? Multi Tool, Hacksaw, Cutting Disc......In ascending order of violence and frustration. Welcome along to the delights of a recent purchase.

OK, it's not perfection but if the stand works the cheapskate in me would leave well alone until another problem manifests itself, which may enable easier access.

 Swarfy.

A blacksmith will straighten the stand, they are quite malleable when heated to the correct temp.

To sort the worn frame lugs, I got some 15mm copper pipe and pressed it into the lugs as bushes.  The pin was a very nice fit and the stand doesn't bash dents in my silencer any more.  Also, because 15mm copper pipe is soft, doesn't rust, and is in plentiful supply, it means I can just replace them if and when they wear out.  Some carefully placed, large washers ensure they don't pop out.

I got a length of ally round bar the same diameter as the stand pivot, and clamped it into the "unworn" position. A MiG welder on a high setting soon filled in the ovality in the hole, then a quick dress with a die grinder and job done for another 50 years.

Hi All,
It looks like the bike has the "gold star" type stand?
The "stop" on these is a half round piece of tube fitted over the cross tube, the stand soon cuts into the half tube
To fix it properly a new piece of half round tube can be welded in place once the old one is cut away.
The wear occurs on an area that is not welded to the cross tube and in my case very little of the original was left, and between the tube and half tube was full of oily crap so trying to weld on the worn part would be a a waste of time.  The pivot lugs on my frame were in tatters so I made some new ones from thicker material.

There is a bush fitted to the stand  and most likely the pin is seized inside it. Cut the pin at each side at the gap between the frame lug and stand. once you have the stand off the bush and pin cane be pressed or driven out. I had to heat the stand to get the bush out of mine.

I made a new pin with threads at each end so when tightened the pivot bush is clamped between the frame lugs and the stand pivots on the bush as it should. there is a grease nipple hole in the stand.
Having the bike stripped to a bare frame made the job a lot easier

Hi Berger,
It's been sitting  there for far too long and gone rusty, an hour or three to finish and braze on a side stand lug and it can go for blasting and painting.
It's a B31 frame that I am going to build a goldie replica, again I have so much sunk into the project that with falling prices I could probably bought a real one *eek*
I'm up the same creek with the RGS *problem* *problem*
