TLS Fitting for a 1962 Flash
« on: 19.11. 2024 09:14 »
I’m looking to fit a TLS Brake to my1962 A10 and I’ve noted that the common way to resolve the anchor lug fit on the fork slider is to build the lug up by welding. A pal of mine has added two plates to the brake plate. He fitted them some years ago and has had no issues, even with some heavy braking experiences.

Firstly what does the forum think of my pals solution and can the welding mod be done in situ, without any damage to the fork sliders internals?

I wouldn't attempt that in situ for a number of reasons. First of all, there will be distortion as the slider heats up and cools down. It is possible that this will cause the bushes to jam. Secondly, it would be awkward and you'll inevitably compromise the quality of the weld. My preference would be to fabricate the lug on a curved support, like the Gold Star mudguard mount and braze it on. Even though brazing isn't quite as strong, if the contact patch is large enough, the fix should be fine. Brazing is less likely to distort the slider where the bushes go past. I wouldn't trust myself to weld it but a professional welder might see it as quite an easy job.

When I fitted my TLS I considered that idea amongst others, and rejected it, I was not comfortable with the strength of the threads. I think it could be done with through bolts. I think bolting into the lug is a better option as its steel.  Mine came with a 1/8" spacer behind the wheel bearing so it looked good but the brake plate nut had no thread.  I took the plate to a local welders and had it built up, simple and not expensive.

Don't be put off by any teeth sucking "its casting mate.....". They get used to Japanese and now Chinese ally castings that are 90+% scrap. A 1950's BSA ally casting will weld beautifully, it top quality metal.

There are quite a few threads on the forum covering all aspects of fitting A65/ Trumpy TLS into A7/A10 just search TLS and you should turn up most of them.
