Primary chain

Looking to replace the primary chain on my 1963 BSA a10. What is the best chain to use and what size, number of links etc ? Is it better to use imperial size or use metric.? I am ok with the rear chain.

Just make sure u don’t get a cheap chain with “split rollers” (designed for low speed applications) as these will disintegrate in the primary. Speaking from experience on a B31 which has a similar primary.

I recall those split roller chains. There was a phase of passing those off as OK for bikes ads they were half the price but I recall the rollers would open up.  They still turn up so its always worth checking to make sure you don't have on on a purchase.

Madras Enfield used split roller primary chain on new bikes, as recently as 1988.


The chain fell to bits. What a surprise.

Hi Nomad,
I have "Regina Gold" primary chain fitted
A lot of lesser chains have thicker side plates which can cause clearance issues
There are some reports that Renolds chain is not what it used to be ??

Maybe just order from Draganfly, 20 quid ish

Regina on mine, new chain, engine sprocket and clutch chainwheel. Two years ago, not had to adjust it yet.   *good3*

As with most things, you get what you pay for! My preference is for Regina chains.
