Fork stanchion sizes
« on: 30.10. 2024 16:05 »
Hi all, On stripping down the forks on my A10 spitfire scrambler, I have discovered a strange set up, the fork stanchions are 30+7/8 inches long (780mm) the are the same diameter (OD 1+1/4 inches ) as the tubes on an M series and the bushes are the same, also between the top of the spring and the lower yoke (triple tree) there is a 8 inch steel tube and a large washer at either end of the steel tube?
According to the BSA parts books ,A series fork stanchions (89-5061) are 574mm long , was this done to increase ground clearance for racing or is it just a botch job from a previous time or what.
Thanks
Paul

Previous owner modification. At one time there was a fashion for some to fit extended forks.

Tube 89 5061 is listed as 22.5 inches long.

There was a suggested fork modification published in 1959 by California importer Hap Alzina to improve the forks for off road but did not involve extended tubes, see below.

Best part of this is "oil up to the bottom of the 'C' on a coke bottle."
