Dual seats
« on: 24.10. 2024 08:35 »
There is a problem at the moment with the supply of decent replacement seats for swinging arm A10's. I have always used RK Leighton for seats but, for quite a while, he has been saying that he can't get hold of decent quality new seat bases. If you have your own original base, no problem, but they are often so rotten that they're beyond repair. Wassells seem to have run out of seats for the same reason. Seats I've bought from Wassells have always been good. I didn't have a seat for my Road Rocket so I looked on Ebay and bought one from India. It's OK, but not great and doesn't look quite right. So I bought another which wasn't much better, but acceptable. I then came across T.J.Wassell Eng. who sells as 'aztec53' on Ebay. T.J.Wassell is not the same Wassell who we all know and love! T.J. Wassell seems to have been in and out of business in the midlands selling spares for as long as the other Wassells. The picture of the seat on Ebay looked very good so I thought I'd risk it as, if wasn't good (described as 'Beautifully made replacement seat') I could send it back. When it arrived I was dead chuffed, it matched the picture and description, and would say it is much better than the Indian ones and looks right on the bike. It was also remarkably similar to seats I have bought from Wassells in the past. It also had a made in UK sticker on it which I suppose doesn't mean much, but you never know! 'fairdeals2017' (Phoenix Motorcycle Spares), also based in the midlands but obviously sellers of Indian made stuff appear to sell the same seat (judging by the picture) as 'aztec53'. As both of these firms are based in the UK there is less risk as Ebay will always support the buyer. The post '60 seat is also available from the same suppliers. We can't expect an 'as original' seat for £140.00 but I can only say I was really pleased with it and next time I post a picture of the bike you can judge for yourselves! p.s. Anybody want a cheap seat for a 54-59 A10, I've got a couple of Indian ones spare!

Very useful info. I bought an Indian one and while the base is OK the filling and cover took a lot of work to get right  Does your seat have the mountings for the blocks?  This seems to be a part that is often missing, you see so many "restos" with collapsed seats.

Mountings for blocks? Yes it does and they were supplied with the seat. When fitting, the blocks make light contact with the frame which is correct.

Thanks for the reminder!
This is something I’ve been putting off for awhile and need to call Leightons one of these days.  *whistle* only been telling myself that for 3 years

Found an original seat from Arizona, seat cover was in bad shape (expected and going to replace), but the front seat mount bolts were seized and couldn’t apply heat without the risk of fire.
Used some Wurth penetrating oil, had the front of the seat sitting in a oil catch pan for a week before I could break them loose and finally got to remove the seat cover and foam.
Surprising only has surface rust and still solid!
Just need to have the seat base blasted and powder coated before calling Leightons.

I had no idea what I was sitting on before the wife suddenly announced she wanted to ride pillion on our BSAOCSA annual rally last weekend. After our test run which involved lunch at the top of the hill of course she seemed to be going down in the world!

I carried out a hasty repair/reinforcement of what looks like a poorly made Indian repop to my uneducated gaze.

It's a lot stronger now and a couple of additional rubber bungs on the rear guard have made it quite serviceable but I do need a new foam and cover so now you've got me wondering if I should really replace the base too.

The rally went well by the way we had over 70 BSA's and more than 100 people down in Goolwa, South Australia.

Thanks for the info Andrew.
