'Sump' plate gauze
« on: 21.10. 2024 05:33 »
I bought a lovely sparkling new alloy sump plate - with magnetic drain plug BUT... It didn't include the pickup gauze bit.
I've tried making one out of brass gauze, but it's not that brilliant, though possibly usable, but then how do you attach the brass gauze to the aluminium casting.
I could make a flat plate gauze one, -integrated with a gasket... I've seen those for sale, -is a flat plate gasket style one okay? That would be easy to make. But...
(The ones I tried making were domed like the original beezer effort).

Thx mate, yes but at $40 (and it'll be plus postage) I'm inclined to make one. Pretty easy.
In the meantime I've put the original back on.

Make one. My first thought was brass gauze but this may be too weak and too fine?  Use solder to trip the hole and fill in the mesh around the joint face.  You could fill it with Aradite and sand it too.  Could you cannibalize a kitchen sieve?

I'd be cautious about making one. If the gauze is too coarse it'll let debris through into the return side of the pump. If the gauze is too fine it will restrict flow to the return pipe and ultimately can cause wet sumping even when running. This has been encountered by another contributor to this forum who had to remove the gauze to stop the bike spewing oil all over the road after about five minutes riding.

Might be good advice CeeBee... My brass gauze is a littler finer than the BSA original.

Hay Jools.
Mikes is $22 so should be $30 landed. It'd take you over an hour to make one so good value really.
I might have a spare, I'll look tonight.
Cheers

Is the flat one the same as the A65?  If it is there should be plenty of used ones about.

Yes interesting... It's all about how far the pickup tube goes down through the gauze yes? Is the A50/65 sump plate convex like the A10/A7 one?

Did a quick search and sellers are listing the same ally plate and flat gauze for he A65 and A10 so the studs and pick up hole are the same.

Thanks for that pic Julian, great help. I suppose as long as the pipe extends below the gauze all should be ok. But it makes you wonder why BSA went to the trouble of making a much more complicated domed and soldered gauze in the first place.

Photo shows originals with damage. The one on the left is the early one.

Ahah Max... the old surface area trick eh?
I wonder if glueing the brass gauze that I've made, into the cast alloy sump plate with 24hr Araldite would be good (safe) enough.
