Primary chaincase inspection t

I have seen a tool with internal teeth to remove the primary chaincase inspection cap in the past. Anybody know where I can get one from?

I have used water pump pliers in the past but they could easily do damage so take care

The tool you mention comes from a Dutch dealer ( I can't recall who), but be aware, that it is supplied with a cap that matches the tool. However the tool serations do not match the BSA cap. That's probably the reason it is supplied with the cap. It looks the same, and works perfectly well, but the dimensions are slightly different. The supplied cap thread screws into the primary cover OK and the cap visualy stands scrutiny. So, from that point of view it's all OK, but the tool only fits the supplied cap. It is dimentionaly slightly different to the BSA cap.

Wrap the ends of some water pump pliers in ducktape.

Use an O ring rather than a fibre washer and it is easy to tighten or loosen and seals better.

Agreed! I think the tool has 60 serrations and a BSA cap has 58! 60 serrations are easier to cut on a dividing head.

Whilst I agree an o ring seals better, in my experience they are much harder to move than a fibre washer

I've had a similar experience. O rings are OK if they have some silicone grease on but dry they can really grip.

I have one. Quite handy tool.
I'm pretty sure I got it from De Groot in Holland but they don't seem to have them any more.

i have one a great tool it's called 18 inch stillson works a treat if your careful

Mine is only finger-tight with a fibre washer. It never seems to loosen.

I use a rocker cap from a Long Stroke engine on my '59 primary, it has a hex and I made a light, flat spanner that I carry in my tool bag.

 Triumph Pre Unit rocker box caps also fit, these have a raised hex so easy to get a grip on. More practical but confuse rivet counters. Same cap also fits oil tank.....

I made my own from stainless. The originals always end up chewed up.
