Yes! I've not done that in the past and had a cable corrode right through in a damp environment.  Dry seems to be OK but if its regularly wet the corrosion can be really rapid.

When fitting an electronic regulator it is worthwhile running earth wires from headlamp & tail light and dynamo to the same earth point as regulator and battery

why ? because of the polarity change ?

I did this when I fitted my DVR.  The old mechanical regulator is not very sensitive (and not very accurate either) and seems to cope if the connection is a bit intermittent. But the solid state ones are a bit faster to react so it pays to have good connections.  I fitted LED bulbs at the same time and these can behave really oddly if they get a bad earth.
