My first car.
« on: 29.02. 2024 20:10 »
G'day Fellas.
Brought across from the rattle gun thread.
 G'day Jules.
My first car was a 1961 Beetle. The flywheel nut is done to 250Lb'in. I "borrowed" a impact wrench from work (we had VW motors as compressors). Then I lent it to someone, never to be seen again!
The compensating nut (same as our 65ft/lb cush nut) on the HD is done to 150ft/lb.
Cheers

I worked at a VW dealership in 1967 a new beetle then was $1200.00 CDN and the deluxe with the 1500 cc  and more chrome was $1500.00 CDN
great little car only 4 bolts held the motor in .
G'day Sean.
I bought it about 6 months before I got my license in 1977 for $750. Rebuilt the 1100 motor to a 1400 with twin port heads, twin Webers, Wade cam and almost every moving part, a lot of which was borrowed from work. Had just started to turn it into a Baja Bug when a P plater ran a stop sign and wrote it off.  *sad*
I took the back of the back seat out and padded it all with shag pile carpet and curtains on the windows. The first Beetle shagin' wagon  *eek*
Cheers

Well done Musky!
My first car was also a 1961 Beetle; purchased to convert into a shooting buggy on the plains of Mt Carnage Station. However, as a young student it became my wheels for the next three years, followed by several Type 3's.
Mind you, there was a growing collection of 2 stroke Yamahas in the shed, and an old BSA A10 given to me by my dad.
It was a rusty, heavy old bike; the seat reduced to springs, and I used to wonder; could it be rebuilt, and what would it be like to ride?
The rest, as they say, is history........

they were fine in summer but cold up here in winter because the heat from the exh had to travel through the body ....had to scrape the inside of the windshield on cold days ,there were gas heater options from hupp and Eberspacher I believe the hupp was originally for a helicopter .
the reserve lever on the floor was a great idea .

The fuel gauge was an optional extra. Otherwise there was a 300 mm piece of broomstick to use as dip stick, and a reserve tap to the left of the clutch.

My first car was a 1937 7/8hp Jowett saloon, bought for £8 before the days of compulsory testing. 800cc side valve twin opposed cylinders of sheer power. Quickly updated to a morris J2 van.

My first car was a 59 Morris mini minor  bought from the dealer I worked for for £30 needed a MOT had a hole in the boot but the motor was great  it was actually for  my Brother as I used a company car each night so my input was to get it road worthy .It took rear brake cylinders and shoes all round but flew through the test despite the hole ! When he checked later my Bro found out it was about 100 off the line at Cowley . Rubber suspension, Stright gear lever and floor starter button rubber mats  no heater we fitted one and just a speedo with 2 warning lights ,blue and red ! side Sliding windows external door hinges etc He had great fun in it !

Fiat 128 and Renault 18 for me, both total crap.  The Fiat had a fuel tank like a colander, and the Renault was sold to me by a 'mate' who said it had one piston ring missing on one cylinder but, as long as I didn't thrash it, it *should* be ok.  It wasn't, broke down on the motorway about 1/3 of a mile before my exit.  Had to push it up an incline along the hard shoulder as I didn't have breakdown cover.  Fortunately, the Rozzers never showed.  Couldn't do that now without a fortnight in hospital! *eek* *eek*

VW 1300 Beetle, kept running perfectly until risk of breaking in two in the middle, rust.
With a set of decent tires, what a superb car on snow.

Had some fun in the end of it's lifespan, painted it army green with big stars on the doors.
My gf at the time nearly fainted, and refused to ever sit in it or drive it.

Very much like this model:

btw, after the vw, dived fully into Granada MK1 world. Great machinery at great SH prices.
Then got a few of the new MK2's, also great to own and drive.

Technically all very ok & easy to maintain, but incredible attacks of rust ate them all up way too soon.
Then Scorpio appeared, in the eyes of Granada fans a horrible, disgusting, repulsive betrayal by Ford :O)

Among my 'collection', a 3.0 Ghia exactly like the pic. Fondly remembered, had it for over 10 years, felt like king of the road. That one worked good to pick up girls :O) Ahh, memories of those good times...

the master of this site said "that one worked good to pick up girls" well i will go to the foot of our stairs i didn't need a motor to pick up girls,  my oooozing of handsomeness was overwhelming back in the day, so much so that the girls picked me up in daddies rover 2000tc or their own mgbgt , wahey they were the days .
