Rear brake cable - confused....
« on: 28.12. 2023 13:53 »
My rear brake is a 7" full width but the cable adjuster mount is cast in the brake plate and threaded - looks like 3/8".  It has the cable with a smaller adjuster that slides in the steel mount (5/16?).  I think the back plate is 42-6315.
I looked at
42-7030
42-7032
42-7034
42-7042
Its not clear if any of them have the correct adjuster for the alloy threaded back plate.

Thanks

If your brake plate is like this then it takes a 5/16 x 26tpi adjuster. Either cable 42 7032 for earlier 1958 models  or 42 5034 for later 1958 and 1959 models.

The threads in the ali plate often get stripped and sometimes the threaded casting lug breaks.

Thanks, I've had a close look and yes, its a worn 5/16 thread.  Its a 59 so 42-5034 looks like a good bet.
Is the cast lug earlier or later than the steel bolt in lug?
I see the steel cable lug can double as the fixing for the brake stay.

Steel lug plate was 1960 season on with lever pointing down and the cable stop on the frame in a different position, slightly angled down for the cable run.

Hi All,
The aftermarket cables are usually too long either inner/outer or both *sad2*
If you have the original that looks right ask for measurements of the replacement
Or send the old one to JJ Johnson's to have one made
An over long outer cable will give a very spongy pedal
