I forgot to consider the frame numbers before powder coating and they, very nearly, completely disappeared. I sanded the powder-coat away with a Dremel grinder and it left what I think is a decent engraved-and-filled look. I then brushed it over with some clear acrylic. Too long since real progress on the A7, so, dusty and dull.

I made a note of the number, got it powder coated, and can't read the number anymore.  However, the number tallies with the log book so won't lose any sleep over it.  I wouldn't worry about it Nomad.

My frame was powder coated black and then clear.  The clever guy put masking tape over the frame number with the black coat and took it off with the clear coat.  Nice job.

OK heresy, but why powder coat?  I like black synthetic enamel.

I remember getting the frame stove enamelled on my BMW R60 40 years ago, doesn't seem to be as common as it used to be.  I heard powder coat isn't as easily damaged as enamel, but the Beemer did a lot of miles with hardly any discernable damage.

I've had a number of frames powdercoated, not the A10 though, and the thing is that if the coating gets cracked or chipped then water can get in and start rusting the frame.
Powdercoat is tough but cracks and chips can happen. I suppose any kind of coating has its limitations. Just had a FJ1200 frame powdercoated and it's good and thick.

I'm doing my frame at the moment. Decided to sand the existing enamel as it was sell attached then spray over with Tractol synthetic enamel.  Etch primed any bare metal.  First time I've done this so some trepidation.  First coat has just gone on and I'm really impressed.  Thinned the Tractol 10% with zylene as per instructions.  Its also been really easy to paint the rear shocks and other bits at the same time.  No problem with frame number as it goes on thin but is hard wearing.  Its widely used on farm equipment.
